Depeche Mode is wicked. I like their newer stuff, but their 80s stuff is what I generally listen to.

Never liked them in their "Speak and Spell" days. Music for the Masses and Violator are the earliest that I can enjoy. Just look at their original version of "Shake the Disease" (and compare with the excellent Hooverphonic version) to see what I mean.

(No shit? They really do have an album called "Speak & Spell". I just used that to describe how, errr, 80's the sound was.)

Speak and Spell was their first album. Their second album A Broken Frame, released in 82, was VASTLY different. Speak and Spell was synth/bubblegum pop whereas A Broken Frame was a much darker sort of synth music. Listen to the top singles from each album for example: Just Can't get Enough vs. Leave in Silence.

Download some tracks from Black Celebration (their 85 album) such as "But not Tonight" and "A Question of Time"

But Not Tonight is not on some CDs (no idea why), so watch out if buying the CD; and get the recorded version rather than the video version if looking for the mp3 (because the video version isn't as good, I think it was unedited or something). I'm not sure if you'll like the songs, but check them out anyway if you liked Violator.

I realized that my singles collection wasn't very complete, so I started buying singles from the Ultra period on forward. Got a lot of material for my next MP3 CD in the car.

I like this version of Enjoy The Silence, but a lot of that may have to do with that I now associate it with Suikoden.

That's "Enjoy the Silence Reinterpreted" from their Remix collection, if you are wondering. That album didn't come out too long ago, maybe 3-4 years ago?

Since when are you dorks liking 80's? I can pull up threads where both you guys thouroghly dissed the time frame/bands...??

Anyway, Violator is their best album by far and there is alot of good relatively unknown stuff on Ultra Rare Tracks.

Next thing you know, you guys will be spouting off the virtues of the Smiths/Morrissey, Psycheldelic Furs, PSB or someshit and blow my mind.

That post is dated to July 2002! I gave examples of a bunch of 80's bands I listened to as a kid, and said I disliked AC/DC and David Lee Roth style music, which I still do =P
