Both films? Are they stretching it out to two movies?

This is great news; I just wish it wasn't New Line making money out of the franchise. Fuck New Line.

Yeah, they don't want to cut it down. Kinda like the last Harry Potter book likely to get split into two films. We are talking about the last ones in a series, they gotta stretch them as much as possible

They need to put food on the table too :-)

Why?

Peter Jackson wrote:You may also be aware that Wingnut Films has bought a lawsuit against New Line, which resulted from an audit we undertook on part of the income of The Fellowship of the Ring. Our attitude with the lawsuit has always been that since it’s largely based on differences of opinion about certain accounting practices, we would like an independent body - whether it be a judge, a jury, or a mediator, to look at the issues and make an unbiased ruling. We are happy to accept whatever that ruling is. In our minds, it’s not much more complex than that and that’s exactly why film contracts include right-to-audit clauses.
New Line CEO Robert Shaye wrote:He got a quarter of a billion dollars paid to him so far, justifiably, according to contract, completely right, and this guy, who already has received a quarter of a billion dollars, turns around without wanting to have a discussion with us and sues us and refuses to discuss it unless we just give in to his plan. I don't want to work with that guy anymore. Why would I? So the answer is he will never make any movie with New Line Cinema again while I'm still working for the company.
Basically Jackson took New Line to court because they wouldn't allow an independant audit of the earnings of the LOTR films. New Line are kowtowing now because the actors involved in LOTR said they wouldn't come back for The Hobbit unless Jackson was involved, and a bunch of New Line's post-LOTR blockbuster hopefuls have tanked.

Jackson is still involved! He is apparently the executive producer. The idea of Del Toro working with WETA gets me all hot and bothered, I will say.

Yeah, but what about the actors? No original Gandalf?

McKellan will probably come back, now that Jackson is involved.

McKellen has already said he'd love to come back and likely will. I don't think he's THAT busy right now. I'm sure if Christopher Lee is alive he'll be back too. Who are the the other possibles? All of the elves? Never read that book.

I think they're looking for a younger Bilbo (obviously) and probably a child Frodo and Sam

Elrond was in The Hobbit. Legolas could appear; he wasn't mentioned by name in the Hobbit but they pass through his Kingdom. Saruman (and I would hate to see anyone else play him other than Christopher Lee, and I hope he's around for a good while longer; right now he's the center of the Hollywood Universe =P) and Galadriel could also appear.

The Hobbit took place before Sam and Frodo's births (it was over 60 years prior).

They'd have no issues getting Bloom (other than Pirates what does this guy have anymore?), Weaving, McKellen, or Lee again I woudn't think. But Blanchett might be an issue depending on her sked. She's relatively active nowadays.
