[DB] discontinues AVI releases; switches to MKV

I've barely even HEARD of MKV... guess I gotta go research it.

Dattebayo Fansubs, LLC is proud to announce that effective immediately, all future releases will be encoded using the superior MKV video container. After we have switched to H264 video compression, we have received countless suggestions from our fans to look into "MKV", a high quality free audio/video container which allowed HIGH DEFINITION video to be stored at a FRACTION of file size as compared to equally encoded and processed AVI file. Our video encoding staff immediately downloaded and evaluated the MKV compression tools and found them to be highly superior to our currently used beta of Windows Movie Maker 2.1, and as a result, we will be releasing all our products directly in MKV form. MKV will allow us to release ultra-high definition versions of both Bleach and Naruto (1920x1080p) with 7.1 channel surround sound while keeping the same reasonable file size of 170MiB. To give you a sample of what awaits you after the switch to MKV, we're releasing [DB] Bleach 166 HDTV. Starting next week, both Bleach and Naruto will be using this new amazing format.
We will no longer release episodes in inferior "AVI" format, and this weeks Bleach will be the last "AVI" encoded release. We will NOT release in both AVI and MKV, or any other format besides MKV.
We will not accept complaints from our users who are unable to play these releases at full resolution.

Sounds cool though, if it can do HD without destroying the file size? I'm going to go give it a try now. Just kinda shocked they decided to abandon the file format they've used for years at the drop of a hat.

LoL ok nevermind... I was had. This time I'll give 'em props cause it's fun to listen to, haha.
"LOL we will never release shit in MKV silly" catchy music!
At least this time it was a 170mb and not a 4gig movie

Look for the "YHBT" either in the message or even in the file name. That's their way of saying "You Have Been Trolled".

I knew this was a YHBT, but it's kinda disappointing that they wouldn't bother to release it in this format. Then again, you can't get away with that much better compression just from the MKV container. It's still an awesome format, though.

Look for the "YHBT" either in the message or even in the file name. That's their way of saying "You Have Been Trolled".
I know all about the YHBT, but the only indication that this was a trolled episode was the fact that it was MKV and the news article right before this one that proclaimed how they'd stop doing AVI and stay with MKV for HD was an article about how they'd never switch to MKV or anything else. Other than that is looks like a totally normal episode.
And Sine-- the last thing I'd want them doing is wasting time releasing it on a variety of formats; stick to one and let's keep moving.

MKV and MP4 are being used more and more for high def, high quality fansubs.

Kinda like with Blu-Ray vs DVD, there's no reason to switch from .avi to .mkv for most people, particularly considering .mkv isn't fully compatible yet (like streaming through the 360). Xvid is more than enough for the purposes of 95% of the people.

I hope MS includes MKV support in the next 360 dashboard update. They likely won't, but it would be great since most HD-DVD/Bluray movies I download are in MKV format.

All you'd really need is TVersity to make the update. Not sure if they have yet, I don't d'load mkvs
