But Richard Kelly is not involved. He wrote and directed Donnie Darko. It's his movie, his idea, and it was good because he was so invested in it. I'm extremely skeptical about any sequel that does not involve him.

I agree. Although I haven't seen the movie, the director/creator is very important to any movie and is often a reason to be or not be skeptical of a film. I've often employed this strategy, as per last June's big release :-)
