New trend for Blu Ray movies?

Now that they've finally figured out that Blu Rays just ain't catchin' on nearly as well as everyone had hoped, they're trying something new: putting the SD version of the film on the Blu Ray disc so you can play it on a standard DVD player. Disney's the first with the Sleeping Beauty Blu Ray coming out

I think this is a great idea...as long as the extras are included. So you're not just getting the film and nothing else.

So they're trying to spur Blu-Ray sales by including a normal DVD too? Kinda weird but I guess that way people will be more willing to buy it with the thought that they'll get a BR player some day and already have the disc.

Same costs to manufacture, greater retail price. Increase the perceived value and maybe even widen the potential market at the same time sounds like a pretty good plan to me. It's actually quite brilliant.

Sounds like a plan to me. I'd be more inclined to buy Blu-Ray if I could watch it on all my DVD players.

A new idea called "Backwards Compatibility" helps new technology become more popular with the public. News at 11.

Not exactly. Backwards compatibility is in every Blu Ray player, they can play normal DVDs. This is almost like Reverse Compatibility or Regressive Compatibility. It's not like you can play Xbox 360 games on your Xbox

They did the exact same thing with HDDVDs, with dual format. Personally, I think the idea was pretty retarded....or at least, the additional $5 dollars or so extra at retail for those discs as pretty retarded.

An extra $5 is dumb. I would be willing to buy Blu-Ray with built-in SD movies if it were the same price as a Blu-Ray disc today. Right now I'm on that line between the benefits of Blu-Ray and the cost of DVD. This is enough to tip me into Blu-Ray as long as that price doesn't go up more.

$5 extra over DVD or over regular Blu-Rays? My understanding is this isn't gonna cost anything extra for the Blu-Ray over the normal Blu pricing. If that's the case it may be worth the $5 extra to me considering I do plan to get a PS3 at some point.

Seems like an obvious feature to include.

The HDDVD dual format discs were roughly $5 more at retail than the single format HDDVD discs. Will it be the same with Blu ray? No idea.
