"We really want to take the state-of-the-art animatronics and take a leap ten years into the future with the technology we will develop for the creatures in the movie. We have every intention to do for animatronics and special effects what the other films did for virtual reality."[15] Some characters will be created by mixing computer-generated imagery with animatronics, and some will solely be created with animatronics or animation. Gollum will be entirely digital again, as Del Toro noted "if it ain't broke, why fix it?"

There's a lot of interesting stuff on theonering.net. Pre-production is well underway, it began in August; Del Toro is moving to New Zealand in a few weeks. The budget for the two Hobbit movies will exceed that of the Lord of the Rings.

Considering what was accomplished with the Lord of the Rings, how much of an impact that film made, I am VERY much looking forward to this one. Of course, my hype level isn't quite up to what it was with Lord of the RIngs where I would check theonering.net every single day (usually multiple times) in the years building up to the film's release (my attendance died off significantly around the time the FOTR DVDs were released).

I've been loosely following the film for the past few years; but now I think it's time to turn up the volume as it gets within a couple years of release. Maybe I'll even pick up Lord of the Rings Online =)

They should call up Jim Henson's company. They did wonders for Farscape.
