I'm so fucking sick of them and radio stations playing their catalog like they're still producing new music. I could do without hearing them for the rest of my life honestly. Sure radio stations play older band like Sublime, but atleast when I hear sublime I maybe wanna have a beer or smoke something, but Nirvana I just wanna be emo and switch the station.

You know Radio is going to be one of those things that changes a lot with the Recession, a lot of stations in LA have already changed format.

I like Nirvana, but I'm with you on radio stations and their abuse of certain catalogs. I found that I couldn't really listen to Led Zeppelin any more because I've heard all of their songs too many times. Part of it is probably my fault, but radio exposure makes it much worse.

I have noticed that stations seem to have a license to play EVERY Nirvana song. That's unusual, since stations typically only get to play the hits for other bands.

I've gotten to the point that I don't even listen to music on the radio. I listen to the news on the way to work (840 AM WHAS in Louisville, KY) and that is about it anymore. If I try listening to music, I end up channel flipping.

The fact that you're hearing SO much old stuff on the radio is very simple: new music sucks ass in comparison. The majority of radio listeners believe this so they play the old stuff to keep their audience.

How else do you explain Metallica (Black) or Razor's Edge (by AC/DC) selling in the neighbourhood of 200,000 units a year 15 years after initial release?

Define "new music". Just because it's "new music" doesn't mean it's "pop music". And just because it's "old music" doesn't mean it's "good music" and/or "pop music".

Anybody heard of King Crimson? Or a Yes song that wasn't "Owner of a Lonely Heart"? Mahavishnu Orchestra? Gong? Camel? Jeff Beck? Return to Forever? UK? Jan Hammer? Tangerine Dream?

Those are the "who the hell is that" bands that my parents listened to, which I inherited as part of my tastes in music. There's a lot of good 70's prog-rock bands out there, but that doesn't mean that good music isn't getting made today: Dream Theater, A Perfect Circle & Tool, Joe Satriani, Ozric Tentacles, or diving into other categories of music: Atomic Fireballs, 2 Bit Pie & Fluke, Thievery Corporation, Soul Coughing, Curve, Frou Frou & Imogen Heap, Pepe Deluxe, Coldcut, Hooverphonic, Jami Sieber, The Knife, Republica, Apparat, Jello/Bola, UNKLE, Orbital, Bowery Electric, Plaid, Red Snapper, Leftfield, Underworld, Way Out West, Deepsky, Amon Tobin (Da Man), Squarepusher, Juno Reactor, Eat Static, Cydonia, Lamb, Talvin Singh, Mocean Worker, Boom Boom Satellites, Hybrid, Lunatic Calm, Overseer, Propellerheads. Heard of any of those?

There's a shit-ton of undiscovered music from bands that never see a radio hit. And just because it's on the radio doesn't mean it sucks. (They play bands like Tool, Soul Coughing, System of a Down, etc.)

You also seem to forget all of the old 60-70's bullshit that was played on the radio: Boston, Alabama, Bob "Is that even a fucking language?" Dylon, Abba, Village People. Three Dog Night, Bad Company, Hall & Oates, Kansas, Meatloaf, The Commodores, The Osmonds, The Partridge Family, The Jackson Five, Styx (*shudder*), Foreigner, The Eagles, The Carpenters, Chicago (and every other band I haven't named that is the name of a town or state), Bee Gees (ugh), Neil Fucking Diamond.

The simple fact of the matter is, those of us who grew up where the early 90's was high school (ie. who were in high school when Nirvana came out) do not, for the most part, like anything that's played on the radio. ANYTHING. I'm obviously not alone here, the recent trend of greatly increasing the number of "older" songs - in ANY genre - on nearly all radio stations is proof of that.

So even though there was a shitton of really bad stuff between the 60s and mid 90s, there was obviously enough that was good. Good enough to still want to listen to now for many people.

It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of trends. Most people don't like any new stuff so they're playing old stuff with a fucklot more frequency now. That's what i was sayin'.

And "new music" is pretty much anything over the last decade.

See, you have a selective memory. You forget all of the bad shit that used to be played on the radio. And no, there is not a "trend to play old shit".

Sine since you like talking music....and I like both music and comics.....track down a copy of the first 2 books of Phonogram. you would probably like it......it's a comic for people who don't like comics.....so simple....it's about what.........a nightclub......and music....and the poeple that love music......and it has a rockin awesome soundtrack

Radios always play terrible music. Every time I hear one song I like, I have to sit through five songs I hate. Not a fair trade.

Hey, I fucking love Nirvana. Anyway, I like old music myself. Pop music has seen a very steep decline in the past few years; How many watered down versions of Sex Pistols, Janet Jackson, Silverchair, and Nelly do we really need? And I am not exactly praising any of those 4 examples.

Aye, I really like Nirvana myself, though I'll admit that just about every single song on Nevermind have already been played out on the radio.

Oh, and let's not forget these fucking Nickelback wannabe "nu metal" loser bullshit bands. I like bands like System of a Down or Linkin Park because they are unique, adding new elements into the genre. But, bands like Godsmack, Nickelback, or Sevendust just make me want to punch puppies... or punch Andrew WK in the face (who I think is more deserving).

Rihanna was good last year, but now we have Beyonce and Britney Spears doing the exact same thing as her this year, and that is what is topping the charts. There's nothing really spectacular about pop music this year. 2007 was the Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake year and they had interesting stuff as well. I don't blame radio for playing an abnormally large amount of older stuff this year.

Well, you're coming from a perspective of somebody who likes some of the pop genres. You don't hear any electronica coming on the radio, so I'm somewhat disinterested. Sure, my rock sides might play out on the radio (prog rock, good metal, etc.), but there's still a lot of garbage out there.

If you like R&B, rap, and "nu metal", I bet the radio is great for you. Same with folk music and lame softer rock during the 70's.
