In Theaters Christmas Day

WHAT
THE
FUCK?!?

There's like 20-25 movies coming out on Dec 25. I have NEVER seen a season like this! It's like they all want to sabotage themselves with too many choices. Instead of every movie getting a good schedule for themselves, the competition is going to kill sales for every one of them.

Not to mention that theaters are just going to completely burn all of their old movies when Christmas Eve night rolls around. Completely new schedule with NOTHING left but the 25th releases. It's going to be a goddamn trainwreck.

?????

I've heard of maybe... 2-3 movies coming out on Christmas, wtf are you talking about? I've probably missed a few, but 20?? Surely you're deranged.

EDIT-- Movietickets.com lists 6 movies coming out on the 25th (and 2 limited releases). That's more than normal, but not nearly to the extreme you're insinuating

Wrestler and Benjamin Button are the only ones of any note, really

Hmmm...with all of the commercials it seems more. Let me statistically reword that: 100% of the movie commercials I've seen in the past two weeks are all releasing on Christmas Day. And actually, it's nine:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marley & Me
Valkyrie
Bedtime Stories
The Reader
Gran Torino
The Spirit
Frost/Nixon
Doubt

That's still a lot.

Not just nine, but six of those will probably be Oscar considerations for several categories. (Or, at least, the people who made them would like that to be the case.)

Does anyone else here even go to the movies on Christmas? My family does, but we almost do it because it's the Jewish family cliche.

Not I. I think you people are crazy. It's breakfast/coffee, then presents, then watch A Christmas Story three times (or whatever DVDs we got), then Christmas dinner, then post-dinner nap. There is no time for movies in that schedule. Nor would I want to do so when 9 movies are coming out in theaters.

Also, why is it a Jewish tradition? I thought Jews were smart/frugal enough to not waste $100 on a family theater outing.

In high school, most of my non Jew friends do it.

The only movie out of that list I would go to the theater to see is The Spirit.

Sine, don't ignore The Wrestler. That movie's been pickin' up huge steam and I just saw a commercial last night showing an Xmas release.

They also release a lot of these flicks on Xmas for 2 reasons:

1) Xmas night is a big movie night, particularly for non-teenagers. Godfather 3 proved the shit out of that and there's been big movies ever since.

2) They can sneak out a movie in time for Oscar noms while trying to capture part of the big crowd. I think that's why The Wrestler is getting pushed a bit. It seemed more like a movie that was going to make only the indie rounds but it's been received much better than expected with a lot more attention. So they're trying to get 'er out to hopefully make a bit of extra coin and give Rourke a better chance at an Oscar nom.

Personally, I have too much family stuff to go out to a movie on Xmas day. We save it for the weekend after usually.

I usually go to the movies X-mas day, that has been a family thing for a long time, but we actually open presents on Christmas Eve.

I know people here hate Tom Cruise, but I find his moviesof this decade to be generally entertaining to me. I am really looking forward to Valkyrie.

I just wish that they used actual Germans for the movie. Despite Bryan Singer's involvement, it just screams that they aren't trying to historical accuracy for a historical event. (Then again, House isn't the most accurate show in the world.)

At least the actors in Munich looked like Israelis.

He had a great role in Tropic Thunder. That endeared him to some of the nerds for sure.

When I went to my grandparents on Christmas day, the cousins and I would always go see a movie after dinner(big southern holiday feast at noon, supper is leftovers from dinner)
