My mom had me move all of my stuff out of her house and I'm 99% done doing so. Up on the third floor we have a bunch of VHS tapes of things we used to record off tv and such. I got to thinking about what had happened to a couple of tapes I really wanted to keep, mainly both my 1995 re-release of the Star Wars Trilogy (the digitally re-mastered version) and then my 1998 version with the added scenes of all the stuff Lucas couldn't add until now. Well the 1998 version was still over at my mom's house in the attic in my room, but I couldn't figure out where my 1995 set went. Lo-and-behold I went in my basement tonight at my apartment and dug through a box and found them. I was so stoaked because I thought my brother had walked off with them.

It sucks though that my Bladerunner bootleg of the criterion collection LD ended up staying with my ex along with 2/5 of my anime on CD/DVD, but that's what the re-release was for.

Anyway, I know VHS is an old media format but what can I do to make sure my VHS tapes stick around till, I dunno, if I ever want to watch them again in my mid 30's or something? I'm going to see if I can find a VHS rewinder so I don't have to worry about wearing out the heads on my VCR but does anyone else have any maintenance or care tips for these? Thanks!

Why not just buy one of those little devices to digitize it? I forget exactly the name of the product... but you hook a VCR (or anything that uses RCA output) up to this device, it hooks into your PC, then you can just burn it on DVD and not have to worry about the bulky plastic encased magnetic rape from going bad.

I gave my 200-some VHS collection to a community fund raiser a year ago. A pretty easy decision to make -- just like giving up audio cassettes.

Anything you want you can find on the internet now. Just get rid of them
