Sci Fi channel is changing its name to Syfy as it tries to move away from the genreā€™s association with geeks and space aliens, TelevisionWeek reports. The network will launch the new name July 7 when its new series "Warehouse 13" premiers, TVWeek says.

WTF.

That's ridiculous. They're perfectly fine as Sci-Fi.

I'd almost say it's an early April Fools joke 'cause of how silly that name looks.

Well, I doubt they're fine in that I wouldn't be surprised if they're struggling to make a profit. I associated the SciFi channel with trashy scifi made-for-tv movies. I know they have BSG, but that's about it.

This does explain why they ran Pirates of the Carribbean last night.

The world doesn't need another Spike TV...

They WOULD be perfectly find as Scifi if they PRODUCED SOME QUALITY PROGRAMMING! When all you show are movies with a smaller budget than an episode of The Office and you let your bread and butter (Stargate / Stargate Atlantis) go off the air don't be surprised that nobody wants to watch your channel! I would bet that their downturn is mostly due to their growing reputation for extremely shitty trashy movies.

Seriously, since Atlantis ended I don't watch Scifi at all, and it used to be one of my most watched channels. There's NOTHING good on. When Doctor Who comes back I'll be there, but that may not be for a year :(

I'll keep watching some of their stuff as long as they keep coming with some quality tv series' but really.....as long as they keep producing movies I'll have something new to watch drunkenly with friends every week in bad movie night.

but still. at least they are honest about their original cinema and naming themselves something that sounds like an STD....

Dude I got 2 go I got sciffi.

Ah, they're doing it to copyright the name so they can brand better.

Still, pick something better than that...

You trademark the name of a company, not copyright. "Scifi Channel" is easily something they can do that with, they didn't need to invent a new stupid name and then insult their fanbase.

This story implies one of the main reasons they changed it is so they can create an "ownable trademark"

It's not any worse than "Wii". :P

Also, if you guys are surprised at how rabid and frothing most corporate branding practices at this point, I don't know what to tell you. Syfy actually strikes me as not a bad effort, considering where they're coming from.

The biggest problem with this name that I can tell is that most of the people they're going to try to reach with this - since my guess is they're not rebranding and making a corporate push to try to grab you guys who've been watching for years - are going to pronounce it "siffy".

SIFFYSIFFYSIFFYWOOOOOOOOOO....good times

Sure it is. Nintendo at the very least re-spelled "Wee" to show two people playing together (the two i's are supposed to represent that as the early Wii ads showed) since the system is all about social gaming.

Give me a reason other than trademarking they chose to re-spell "Sci-Fi" into "Syfy". NBC hasn't.

No. "Wii" is the worst consumer product name ever. It's like you had a kids' game revolving around talking and then shushing people and then called it "Shhh It!!!!"

This is especially true because it used to be called the Revolution, which was the best name Nintendo had come up with for a console yet, the only console name I've actually ever even been impressed by.

I think I have actually PLAYED WITH MY WII (durrrr) less because it's not named the Revolution anymore. :P

That was a sad, sad day in corporate branding.

No point in starting a series in the middle, I will stick to ECW for now. One day I will download it a season at a time.

Well, it ends tomorrow night. Even if you start the mega-download now it won't be done before then :-)

There aren't enough hours before the finale to even watch it all, any how.

Eh I am fine with that means I dont have to wait for new episodes. Doesnt mean I'll stop watching ECW every Teusday night I am not closing at work.

And I guess this explains some as well, considering that ECW is kinda WWE's rookie brand with mostly new talent workin gto get established.

Asshole, you're part of the problem!

Meh, I don't care. After BSG, I have no reason to watch the damn thing, anyway. They were already in the process of losing their "target audience" by replacing the real sci-fi shows with wrestling, reality shows, and F-rated horror movies.

Now, the transformation is nearly complete, and they'll just be another Spike TV bullshit channel. I'm sure that G4 isn't that far behind.

If ECW is pulling better ratings than anything else on their network, I can't blame them for looking to it.

I doubt it's pulling better ratings than BSG. Also, ECW is really popular on their network because the F-grade movies aren't doing much.

Thats possibly true, the thing I read said that it pulls the highest ratings on the network for Teusday nights. I dont know what the ratings are compared to other nights.
