Well, the film has debuted to very positive reviews, premiering in a few theaters to date.

Anyway, I am writing this to focus on plot details revealed so far by preview comics. This post may contain spoilers to the movie, but is mostly intended to bring some details of what the movie will be about to light.

So it has been revealed that the character Nero (villain) is from the TNG era; specifically, he arose in the aftermath of Nemesis where a Reman ship led by the movie's villain (Shinzon I believe) destroyed life on Romulus. There is also continuity from the TNG episode "Unitication" where Spock was working with Romulan representatives. So there is a bit of continuity here in the film series, and this is correctly the 11th film in the plotline.

Anyway, despite the whole push for a more mainstream Star Trek, Abrams seems to have also created a film that will be very appealing to traditional Star Trek fans; critics are saying this is as fresh as the series has felt in decades. One thing noted is that careful consideration has been taken to keep the existing canon intact; although this story looks to be a replacement in the timeline for the famed episode "Balance of Terror" which is also the primary inspiration for the plot; though this is just speculation. Whether this turns out to be the case remains to be seen.

The Balance of Terror was an original series episode where the Federation encountered the Romulan Star Empire for the first time in 100 years when a Romulan ship with a devastating weapon begins attacking Federation Outposts along the neutral zone. It was also the first time they had laid eyes on a Romulan, and discovered that they look like Vulcans (Spock speculates a common ancestry).
