Hey, look, an MP3 player in front of me. Is Kanye on there? Oh, look, he is. Oops! I must have accidentally pressed the "delete" button over and over and over. Now I can't find him on there at all.

This one is beyond the pale for me. You got a nineteen year old girl bawling her eyes out backstage with one of the biggest nights of her life ruined cause Kanye's a fucking douchebag. I loved Kanye West for years but I'm not putting up with that shit.

I love the half-hearted apology on twitter:
The Douchebag wrote:I’m sooooo sorry to taylor swift and her fans and her mom. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers! …………………… i’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!……………. beyonce’s video was the best of this decade! I’m sorry to my fans if I let you guys down! I’m sorry to my friends at mtv. I will apologize to taylor 2mrw. welcome to the real world! everybody wanna booooo me but i’m a fan of real pop culture! No disrespect but we watchin’ the show at the crib right now cause … well you know! i’m still happy for taylor! Boooyaaawwww! you are very very talented! Oh, Kanye. How could you be so heartless?

Also: that stunt with Sasha Baren Cohen and Eminem was a year ago? Jesus.

Nobody's trying to hear it. The best comment I saw on Facebook was some sixteen-year-old kid who wrote "you suck. don't post some massive apology about this either, you fucking asshole". That kid was so right.

Well even if I don't care for her music, it's still some teenage artist that's worked hard for what she has achieved. I may not give a shit about it, but it could be her biggest work-related achievement for the rest of her life. Fuck him for shitting on that.

Why is everyone so surprised that Kayne West is a Douchebag? This has been well known for awhile.

The overreaction of the media and Internet people make her sound like she's 10 instead of 20. She's probably already laughed about it. It's not like he hit her or something.

I don't think so. Some of the coverage I read had that she was crying her eyes out. This is one too many times for Kanye to pull this stupid "ah, my bad" shit. I definitely blame it on the asshole and not the Henny. Ye needs to grow up.

At the time she did cry.

Afterwards with all the support I'm sure she can smile about it or even laugh considering the outcome.

Heh, I liked the Yo Dawg pics, so this might be a good meme to pick up on.

I think the only way Kayne can make this up to her is if he went on the CMT Awards, and when they announced some country award, it would suddenly go to Kayne (who wasn't even on the list), except Swift would interrupt him and say that she thinks she should win the award. Everything would be planned by the two and all involved, but it would be a way for Swift to take back what she deserved.

There are forum posts around that say she cried, but they also say that she's 15 or 17 years old (she was born in 89, this is not 2004 or 2006). Apparently she went on a talk show yesterday and said she was angered by the rudeness, but that was all. Apparently she went back on stage 5 minutes later and performed.

If anything, she'll gain popularity over it. They had her on the View on Monday 'cause of it and Leno had Kanye on to apologize on the first ep of his new show on Monday. I was in Chicago on Monday and it was on nearly every news station we turned to either in the morning or in the evening.

If her handlers are good, they'll definitely use this sympathy exposure to promote her well.

Was that really necessary? Kanye's Facebook page is full of homophobic country fans who hopped on just to call him a gay fish. All props to Trey/Matt but that one is kind of abusable.

You're a weird guy Mental. It is just a joke, and I am sure it is not being used in a homophobic context outside of its existence as a meme. Sure, in the larger context of the world it is used in a homophobic context (gay fish = negative). However, I wish for you to see that we are all nerds here and are not treating it in that light, merely cashing in on the internet lawls.

As I've noted before, I think the pervasive use of the word "gay" as an epithet and insult tends to reinforce the constant discrimination gay and lesbian Americans face all over the country. "Gay fish" here basically means asshole - i.e., being gay = being an asshole. I do know nobody here is really genuinely that homophobic and nothing explicit is meant by it, I absolutely do. But it's still a language pattern that reinforces stereotypes.

Again, I don't plan on throwing any particular fits over it all the way I did before, but I still have my opinion. The word "nigger" was once just used for lawls too, remember (still is, if you go to the deep South).

(Also, the country fans who hopped out of the woodwork to savage Kanye for being a gay fish on his Facebook page are not just using the phrase for lawls.)

And not elsewhere because you Northerners and West Coasters suuure are so much more progressive than us. (Edit: Sorry, I know saying it this way is dickish but it's how I felt when I first read your post :P Also I found it kind of funny that you gave an entire region of the country some shit in a post about defending people who don't deserve it)

Trash is everywhere. I know that you didn't really mean it this way, but having lived in the region you're referring to it isn't isolated there.

And there's me not being white and being in the South. I get where your sensitivity on this issue comes from, Replay, I do. But I focused on the "gay fish" as a whole (and linked it to a very great South Park episode) when I first noticed this thread name changed - in that way I linked it to Kanye being a jackass. Language is just such a subjective concept that specific words are read and jump out differently to everyone.

I doubt pretty much all of us on here have linked "gay" to being an asshole or even used it to describe something in a derogatory fashion in recent, or hell, not-so-recent memory.

Edit 2: I can't believe you have me defending the deep south over here. Well, in any case, the point of me pointing this madness out to you is more the fact that assholes are assholes everywhere in this country and saying they're all in the south is false. Assholes are just more condensed, vocal, and televised around here.

I actually wondered when I wrote that if I should just extend it to the nation and world as a whole, and yes, I agree. I've definitely seen my share of racism here in California, so I'll retract any region-specific connotations.

If you saw the episode, the fact that Kayne is a "gay fish" has nothing to do with being gay or a fish. It because he can't see anything past himself enough to realize the joke.

PostPosted:Thu Sep 17, 2009 12:26 pm
by Mental
Actually, in the episode, the joke is on Kanye both because he's too self-interested to realize what's going on AND because eating "fish dicks" is presented as something inherently humiliating and a valid reason to make fun of somebody over. I stand by my opinion.

This is the thing. The prejudice runs so deep that you are not conscious of the fact that being gay and participating in a gay sex act is routinely held up as something to be mocked, or a sign of inferiority. That is, in fact, a crucial element of the "joke". You could run the same joke around Kanye not realizing he has superpowers, or something, but it wouldn't much resemble its current form.

Also, again, if you doubt that this "innocent" joke is providing an excuse for a lot of prejudiced people to be viciously and violently homophobic, I suggest you check out Kanye's Facebook page and some of the comments people are leaving. :P Even if Trey and Matt didn't particularly mean anything by it, and I don't think they did, the effect of this meme on the national debate as a whole has been kind of bad for gays in general.

Here, let me ask something - do you think the joke would have worked if it was based around him eating pussy?
