Will go pick it up after work today.

SPOILERS I WARNED YOU SPOILERS I WARNED YOU SPOILERS AHEAD

I went in to watching this with the intention that it would follow somewhat closely in both visual respect and script to the original story line. Before I viewed this film I thought very hard about how it would be possible to condense all 24 (26) episodes into 4 films. I read the introduction in the case after viewing the film as to not spoil what I was getting myself into. The first 5 minutes of the film feel like the first 5 minutes of the original series. It was a great hook and I thought it was proving my point that this was a polished up edited version of the original 1995 release, aside from some stronger dialogue and translation on the sub (yes, I watched the sub. I have nothing against the American voice actors and actresses but I do not feel they can capture the emotion of the characters as well as the Japanese. The purest in me wanted to go this route instead and meerly subjective and open to ones personal preference).

After awhile I started noticing that this was not the Evangelion that I grew up with in High School. This was different, but different in a good way. Having watched the series over and over numerous times in the past, arguing, theorizing, constructing, deconstructing every plot element in living rooms, classrooms and fourms I thought I'd be able to pick out almost all of the changes in this work. It turns out I didn't have to as this is a different re-telling of the series with the same plot, just explained better. Anno takes Evangelion to a new level as a series and a story. If the TV series was Anno's Apocrypha then Evangelion: 1.01 is the new Canon. I cannot tell you how much more rich and full the story is, you will have to see for yourselves to comprehend.

The visuals are crisp and beautiful. If you pay attention you can notice all of the details in each scene Anno wants you to focus on. The entire film is very easy to follow, understand, and digest.

When I say that this work is new I mean in the sense that the story line has been reworked gentley and it shows how much work and attention to detail was put into it to make it work. I believe this film series to be what Anno wanted Evangelion to truely be thus far (No Lucas here). He understood the sanctity of what he created and preserved the core elements and moving parts, freshened up the look while taking the story to new places and fleshed out the characters more. The TV series wore armor, the films remove it and show you things that when you go back to the TV series see where they could have fit into it.

The music is still as classic as it was when it was first released to TV. The favorite themes are all still there but they are not as overplayed like in a TV series.

This was a very meticulous overhaul of a classic series done right. Hollywood could never reboot a series like Anno has done to Evangelion. I'm looking at you J.J. Abrams.

Is this a remake or a re-edit?

It's Evangelion done better. So a remake. Higher budget, too.

I'm gonna start ordering anime when I start making a real disposable income again (if that ever happens). The Astro Boy remake is before this though on my list, then Battle Angel Alita, but this sounds kinda hot.

@ Zeus:

In my opinion, this is the version Anno wanted people to see.

@ Shin:

Higher budget doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. This was higher everything, in every respect, everywhere.

@ Replay:

This is very hot.

They've also released a 1.11 version that has a ton of revised scenes and several additional scenes that I'm holding out for before I give this a watch.

It is a shame it did not come out in bluray here. However, you may be able to find at least a 720p version floating around.
