Peter Jackson vs James Cameron

With Return of the King at over 1.1 billion which followed two previous movies in the trilogy which also hit almost a billion each, it's clear Tolkien and Peter Jackson have some serious market power. The market for blockbusters may have expanded in value since that time period. This week, in only its third week, the alltime third ranked movie at 1.075 billion 'Avatar' will surpass that; and at the slow rate of decline in sales performance, is the first movie to challenge the high #1 spot of Titanic (also by James Cameron).
James Cameron promised that Avatar would revolutionize special effects in the movie industry the way that Terminator 2 did, and shock the sales charts in the way Titanic did. I do know that many people thought this to be insane and that Cameron might have lost it. He has proved those critics wrong on both accounts as it is clear that Avatar has brought Special Effects to a whole new level, and it is clear that this one is selling at an insane pace.
The question is, will The Hobbit be able to do that. Will Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth in two of the most anticipated movies of all time be enough challenge James Cameron's throne as King of the World (now 'King of the Universe' as BBC has dubbed him).
Actually, now it is Sir Peter Jackson, as Peter Jackson has just been Knighted.
Coming in April.
