Now that Full Metal is over (Sine, I haven't heard your impressions yet) and Bleach has been regulated to occasional watching, what other anime series have you guys been checking out that you would recommend? Ones that have been released within the last few years. I've seen Death Note, Hikaru No Go, and Yakitate Japan. I've tried Aquarion and it's OK but not nearly as good as the guy's previous effort. I did get Code Geass a while ago, maybe I'll get into that one. Or finally give Infinite Ryvius a try. But if there's any others you guys recommend, it would be appreciated

If you haven't watched Code Geass yet, watch it. It's very very good. One of my favorite anime of all time easily.

You could always try branching out from Naruto to One Piece. It's a little sillier, but the characters are all likable(Inc Don rambling). ;p

It seems like nobody's really pushing on an awesome series to watch like Death Note, or Naruto when it first came out. Anime been on a slow few years, eh?

Well consider that most of the stuff that caught our attention wasn't even new at the time when it popped up stateside(DBZ for instance), and everything since then is readily available via fansub, it's not all that surprising.

I didn't even know who or what Naruto was until I saw it subbed 24 episodes in give or take. That was back in 2002, or 2003.

Seriously watch Monster.

Except for the Full Metal remake. It's Death Note good

Yeah, Soldats was the best group when it was being aired but it's officially released in the states, now.

Gantz (although they could have done the entire series in 10 episodes instead of boring drawn out episodes). Last Exile (though I thought the ending still sucked dick).

It's too bad there isn't a good sci-fi anime series to watch. Ergo Proxy was damn good, and GitS:SAC is one of the best series out there.

Yes, Zeus, I'll get to FMA. Monster sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if it's my cup of tea. I prefer a more fantasy setting like that, and it seems like a typical murder mystery type thing.

Trust me when I say Monster is hardly typical. It's a deep look into human nature and what we can become if pushed enough. Every character that appears for more than a few chapters in the manga (and the anime is fiercely loyal to the original work) is given a background so you can understand what their motivations are and at almost no point in the entire series is it through the eyes of the police.

This isn't CSI done by the Japanese - this is an epic mystery that involves a Japanese doctor.h

Also the sound track is amazing and is one of the few animes where I actually spent the extra cash to import the soundtrack.

Fuck now I want to watch it again.

Not yet. Having 3 kids under 22 months old and a rental property that's turning over and will require some work before the end of the month is eating into most of my spare time. I did grab the first 3 eps, I will let you know my impressions the second I watch it

Upon further investigation Monster only has the first 15 episodes released onto DVD... You can get the other 59 episodes over something like iTunes, but, yeah, fansubs might be your best bet.

And to think Viz thought they could sell every 15 episodes for $60... No wonder Monster bombed in sales and they stopped development on DVD.

I think the anime DVD companies try to overcompensate the fansub industry by charging an outrageous amount for DVDs. All it does is force more people to use the fansubs.

Most of the anime pricing I've seen lately has been alright, especially when compared to 5-10 years ago, but $60 for 15 episodes is criminal.
