Really? Really?? Really???

I don't have a problem with Mark Wahlberg and he's been fine in stuff I've seen, but I don't think he can pull over Nathan Drake at all. In reality, I highly doubt the movie is going to resemble anything about the games anyway.

They're talking about DeNiro playing his dad and Pesci playing his uncle. Let me ask you this: thinking back to those characters in the game, do you think those two guys would play them well?

Those aren't even characters in either of the games. It sounds like they're replacing Sully, who was his older partner with his dad and uncle.

That's one of the reasons I'm expecting the movie to resemble the games in name only.

Exactly. The fact they're even talking about putting those two characters in the movie should indicate to you right there you're not going to get a movie that's really that close to the games. Think of it more of an "inspired by the game" film as opposed to a film version of the game.

All game movies have been like that. Look at the Resident Evil films (Eric can help point out the differences). They're nowhere close to the games but they're actually arguably the best of the bunch quality-wise.

Arg there's nothing quality about those abomination Resident Evil movies.

I felt they were fairly decent.... Although that building that is Umbrella headquarters... I used to go skating in front of it when I was a child =P

It might end up being a decent flick, but it'll still make me mad because I'll know what it could have been! :)

Wahlberg is a good actor and he can pull it off. Probably not the first person I would pick, but I think he can still do it. I haven't played the games, but I've seen enough on them to have a feel for who the character is, and really, just about anyone who's not Harrison Ford would be a let down.

But, someone who basically plays one of Harrison Fords iconic characters would be a great fit, and it's a shame they didn't pick him because I would have seen the movie if they had: Nathan Fillion.

That's who I would have liked and was one of the names floating around.

There's nothing wrong with Wahlberg, he's more than a competent actor (I wouldn't call him "good" but he does roles well enough not to destroy them). But the problem with a guy like him is the same as casting any recognizable star: baggage. It's not necessarily bad baggage, but all recognizable stars come with expectations of the type of performance you're going to get out of them aside from the few really excellent actors out there (like Johnny Depp, Gary Oldman, and, a decade ago, Pacino, DeNiro, and Nicholson) who are excellent in any role they're in. The casting of Wahlberg is more a reflection on the direction of the film (ie. appeal to mass market as much as possible by casting a recognizable star who happens to be a "hunk") than a reflection of the actor himself.

It's not like they're casting Asston but you still worry about what they're thinking.

Heh, that idea of baggage (or what I would call "typecasting") is probably the reason why Kupek suggested Fillion.

The Departed, I Heart Huckabee and Three Kings. He's earned the benefit of the doubt from me. When he's given quality, he can deliver quality.

Really, I don't care about being faithful to the game. But a modern day Indiana Jones without the baggage of the actual Indiana Jones would be great.

Yeah, I don't doubt that Mark is a good actor. I think he's proven himself, and he would work out as Nathan.

And that's where we're going to differ. I wanted a faithful adaptation of the characters from the game with a new story because I'm a really big fan of the series. All of my friends who are big Uncharted fans aren't pleased with the casting either, but they were hoping for the same thing as me. I don't think he can pull that off. For most people, Wahlberg will probably be fine and maybe even good because they just want a good action movie. That, I'm sure he can do.

Like I said, I don't dislike Wahlberg. I've never seen him in a role and said "wow, that was a great performance...I gotta see him in more stuff", but I've also never said "wow, he was terrible...I never want to see another movie with him again".

I hope you're right. I don't have anything against Wahlberg myself I'm just worried what he may represent.

They could stand to depart from the game when making the film. It was fun to watch the cutscenes and all, but you can't just translate that directly. A lot of stuff needs to be cut and other stuff filled in to make a good movie. The games need to be a foundation to build upon. But at the same time, they can't just force formulaic crap in there (there's only a slight hint of romance in the games) or make it too much like Indiana Jones otherwise it'll feel like a rip.

That's pretty much what I feel about his abilities. Passable, even decent, but nothing special

And the reason why I was excited they were going to bring him in. He looks a lot like Drake, is a pretty passable actor, and has zero expectations from any demographic (ie. they won't feel obligated to have him shirtless for the ladies)

Looks like it's going to be a "family affair" according to the director

Kup, you may be getting Crystal Skulls as opposed to Raiders of the Lost Ark
