Not much is known, but Weiland has had a long history of drug issues, including numerous heroin binges. One of the last survivors of that era of rock stars who just weren't able to quite escape the needle.

Particularly Stone Temple Pilots were a major part of the music I listened to through the entirety of my teen years and early 20s. He will be missed.

STP was like a forgotten third wheel to the Pearl Jam / Nirvana dynamic. I liked stp though, and to a certain extent VR, so it's too bad.
