It reminded me of Rock's battle with his gates: near limitless power at the cost of his life. Hell, we're still not completely sure he's dead. There's some (small) chance that it drained him, but didn't completely kill him, and somebody at Konana will pick him up. It's very small, but possible. I thought Shino (bug guy) was dead, until his dad came to rescue him, like...oh, 5-10 episodes later.

Then again, it looks like they've already killed off two minor (Jourin) characters earlier. Also, it's common for them (as well as in Kenshin) to flesh out a somewhat minor character to envoke emotion when they kill them off. Same thing happened with Haku in episode 9 or 10.</div>

Shizune isn't aware Naruto's team is on a mission right now, neither is Kakashi, or anybody else but the 5th and those 2 other Jounin who found Sakura.</div>
