It's not like everybody hasn't been saying it

Hollywood is bankrupt of ideas and 2005 is the year of remakes

Let's try to name them all:

House of Wax
The Longest Yard
The Honeymooners
Bewitched
Herbie: Fully Loaded
Bad News Bears
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Dukes of Hazzard
Pink Panther
The Amityville Horror
Assault on Precinct 13
Batman Begins
King Kong
War of the Worlds
The Brothers Grimm
Rock School
The Lords of Dogtown
The Big Bounce
Kingdom of Heaven
King Arthur
Land of the Dead
...I'm sure there's more...

The following from your list are not remakes: Rock School, Kingdom of Heaven, King Arthur, and Land of the Dead.

Lords of Dogtown really isn't a remake, it's just based off of a great documentary (Dogtown and the Z Boys; and I don't like skateboarding).

While Hollywood is spinning it's wheels, there are great indie movies out there and tons of documentaries you can go see. The indie film market is booming, just go and watch some great stuff there.

Add The Island to that list.

What is the Island a remake of? And if you say Manos, I'm going to kick you in your face.

There will be no kicking my face today, good sir. The Island is a remake of The Clonus Horror, a movie which appeared on, yes, MST3K. Well, I use the word "remake" kinda loosely. Plagarism seems to be the better term. It's kinda hard to explain if you haven't seen Clonus. Here's more info on the subject.

I suppose I can understand Michael Bay's logic on picking this one up. If you remake a low budget movie that nobody saw, you've got nowhere to go but up, right? Still, give credit where it's due, no matter how shitty your source.

As an aside, Torgo, since I read (part of) that Entertainment Weekly article, I have to ask: you don't ever feel bad about using an avatar from a performance whose actor committed suicide before the movie's premiere?

He committed suicide? That wasn't in the entertainment weekly article...was it?

Rock School is a remake of itself (School of Rock). I don't know where I got Kingdom of Heaven. King Arthur is a remake of so many other King Arthur movies. Land of the Dead is a sequel to a remake, and it may possibly be a remake to Day of the Dead. (Either that, or they are skipping that movie in the list of Dead remakes.)

If you want to go far enough back down the timeline, pretty much everything modern is a remake or adaptation.

Just run with it. If you don't like what's in theatres or on TV, don't patronize it.

Yeah, yeah, but it's been more blatant than usual this year.

John Reynolds' (Torgo) suicide was briefly mentioned in the article. Apparently he had a drug problem and was high on acid for most of the shoot. I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, but I can't say I've lost much sleep over using his likeness.

Avatars are avatars. I get no measure of guilt out of using a mugshot for mine.

Rock School is not a remake of School of Rock. It is a documentary about a guy who teachers little kids how to, basically, be rock stars. Any similarity that has to the Jack Black movie is coincidence; it's about a real guy who's been doing it for a while. King Arthur (which is from last year) is not a remake, it's just another take on the legend. Land of the Dead is not a remake, but a sequel (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead).

There's actually a bunch more from that list which aren't remakes, but others have pointed most of them out.

Was Crash a remake?
How bout Layer Cake?
Vanity Fair?

I think Herbe is a sequal too.

Land of the dead is not a sequal to the remake. Land of the dead is a sequal to the original which was a completely different movie from the remake
