Wow, I haven't enjoyed a Burton movie this much since The Nightmare Before Christmas. It was funny, the art direction was beautiful, and the casting was superb. I wouldn't say that the kids outperform Depp, but they certainly take their share of the spotlight. The Oompa-loompa muical numbers were modernized, and very well done, I might add. Other than that, this isn't a musical, and the film moves at a much quicker pace because of the lack of songs.

I even liked the "changes" they made. For the record, I'm basing all my Wonka knowledge on the 1971 movie, as I have never read the book. As much as I loved Gene Wilder's deadpan Wonka, Depp's portrayal is downright creepy. The scenes from Wonka's past make him more of an understandable character than before. It also sets the stage for the new ending, which is far more touching.

This is definitely a worthy remake. I really can't say which is better because this film stands so well on its own. I would gladly buy the DVD and place it right beside the first movie (once I get that/i] DVD).
