I took this game on my last two 4-day vacations (one ice-fishing and another to Vegas this past weekend) and I really got into it. I barrelled through the first two levels of difficulty then had to work about half way through Sweatin' mode.

Quick rundown for those who haven't played the game (skip to the next paragraph if you've played it). You tap these buttons in beat with the music. There are circles around the buttons that shrink and when the circle is the exact size of the button you're supposed to tap (ie. you'll be on beat). There are also lines you follow where you tap and drag the stylus along with the button that now moves along the line and sometimes back. There's also "windmills" which you rotate a certain amount rather than tap to gain the points. Like any good rhythm game, there's a combo meter and a different score for how "on beat" you really are. The more on-beat and the higher the combo, the more your energy increases. You lose energy over time and if you miss. Your energy hits zero, you lose. There are some other gameplay elements, but you can read a FAQ on those, they don't help for this post.

I kept getting beat on songs where I didn't miss a single note and I was wondering what was going on. Then I realized that not only do you have to hit the notes, on the harder levels of difficulty, you have to actually ensure you hit them well enough to maintain your energy. The energy loss due to time is actually greater than the energy you get from a weak hit or if you don't get enough combos.

Now I'm all for making games difficult, particularly rhythm games, but how can you justify making the player lose when they have a 200-plus combo going and haven't miss a single note? This actually happened to me a few times (particularly during You're My Inspiration, where there are a lot of pauses with no note playing).

Now, I beat the game on Sweatin' Mode and got Hard Rock mode which I'm working through now (they make the buttons half the size so they're harder to see, particularly if you're like me where your hand tends to go over the screen while playing). But this difficulty level is just poor game design.

Other than that one very large flaw, this game is fun as hell and definetely worth picking up.

Yeah, the game kicks ass, it got released last year in the middle of the likes of FF12, Zelda, and such. So only like 3 or 4 of us here noticed it.

I noticed it, I just sold my DS so I never played it. It looks pretty rad, though. I'm not too big into rythm games aside from Guitar Hero but I would like to try this at some point.

DS has the most great games on it. It was the system of 2006 IMO and this year may be even stronger

Without trying to sound like a we blanket, in my town ive never seen anyone over the age of 12 playing on a DS. I can go to Starbucks, or other populated areas, and find 2 or 3 people college/young professional on a PSP.

I'm not claiming the sales figures are made up or accusing anyone of anything outrageous, i'm only basing my thoughts on what i see in my small part of the world, but i dont see where the hell the DS sales are going...

As much as I enjoyed my DS (sold it because I needed money), calling it the system of 2006 or saying it has the most great games on it is just wrong. I don't take a bus, a plane, or a train to work. The only place I play my games is at home on a 40" TV. The Castlevania games are awesome, New Super Mario Bros. is retro fun, Mario Kart is great (not as good as Double Dash)... it's just not the best console for me whatsoever. It sells great - fine. We all know sales aren't reflective of quality.

Are you saying, Zeus, that the DS has more A games than the PS2 or Xbox or even the GC? Or are you just comparing it to the PSP?

I think the DS Mario Kart is the best of the bunch myself. Took all the great elements of the previous games and put them into one great package.

Lotus, I meant that in 2006, there was more good/great games for the DS than any other system. Well, that's my opinion anyways. To me, graphics or system don't really mean anything, I just want great games. I'm just as happy lying down in bed trying to beat Jumpin' Jack Flash on Sweatin' mode in Elite Beat Agents as I am relaxing an my super-couch trying to beat General RAAM in Hardcore in full 1080i glory on my 42" plasma TV.

It's true, until the release of Xenosaga III the late summer, there hadn't been much of any importance on other systems for that entire year. The DS was the only system that was getting interesting games out for it, and it was getting VERY interesting games. Not to mention a lot of spillover from the previous year: Phoenix Wright definately falls into that category. Phoenix Wright was a hot commodity last year, people were paying over 100 USD for the game on Ebay for a good portion of last year. I think the big game last year was New Super Mario Brothers, that game is the shit.

Mario Kart DS: that one is awesome, I particularly like it because of the 8 player multiplayer option; that's always a lot of fun. Though as the Wii VC has proven, Mario Kart 64 is still a very popular option.

latest VG Cats enjoys some EBA humor.... I didn't laugh as I was more shocked than anything.... it's funny, but not "haha" funny.

UPDATE - looks like that comic is gone.... I wonder what happened. It was pretty offensive..... but who cares? it's the internet.
