  • Jeff Gerstmann fired from Gamespot for Kane & Lynch review

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

While Nintendo fanboys may be dancing up a storm (8.8 ), this is fucking shameful. At this point, neither CNet (Gamespot owner) nor Gerstmann has confirmed this, but the review was posted and then removed.

Haha, yeah, I've been following that thread for a bit. 22 pages in four hours, madness!

But yeah, seriously fucking shameful.

Yeah, somebody posted the link to the video in the thread as well. Not on the main site anyway.

It's not even as if I read Gamespot anymore, aside to glance at the reviews occasionally, but I do listen to The Hotspot (and did watch On The Spot before Gallup left). Jeff was Gamespot after Kasavin left.

Did you go look at the Eidos board?

1up gave the game a fairly positive review, they scored it 7.5 which is the highest score the game received. Ca-ching?

Well, 7.5 ain't bad for a game that got a 6 elsewhere. I wouldn't call that greasing anybody's palms, unless it received 2/10 elsewhere.

Oh, and I was somewhat interested in this game. Now, I will never even think of buying this game or saying anything good about it.

Fuck Gamespot, too. Zeus, quit reading these guys.

Or - this is a radical idea - the 1up reviewer thought the game deserved a 7.5. Why are you so convinced 1up has been bought?

I just read Gamespot's news for the most part so it makes no dif to me one way or the other

Because they often are among the highest scorers for games they advertise, but otherwise the lowest for games they don't. This game is a perfect example, it took me about 3 seconds until I saw a massive ad for it, and their score for it is at the high end of the list.

Last time I read the site, they were giving Bully a 10/10, which indicates that they consider it among the very best games of all time. It also happened that the game was advertised all over their site.

He. He gave it a ten. The whole site did not. When you look at a review on a site, it doesn't say "By everyone at IGN Xbox Team". It says "By Hilary Goldstein". Reviews are subjective, not objective. You should know this by now. If Michael Donahoe (I believe it was) thought Bully was a 10, that's his call.

They also advertised for Lair, Hellgate London, and Timeshift. Go look those reviews up.

EGM (1up) has lost publisher ads before for giving their games unapoligetically low scores. If you knew anything about the group at Ziff Davis, you'd know they're not on the take from any publishers. And now you do.

Remember that it's CNet/Eidos here. Gamespot is just the guys running the site.

Not only did they have ads for Hellgate: London, they had the lead developer or producer on 1up Yours and he talked at length about the game.

I "found" a copy of the game cause it looked interesting... I played through the first stage and then the game told me to do something and wouldn't believe I was ever actually doing it ("Hold MB3 and Press W twice" WTF kind of FUCKED UP control scheme is that? I've got 104 keys on this fucking thing and you're using 12!) so I tossed it.

So I typically used Gamespot as one of my main review sources. I don't think I'm going to bother with them anymore after this.

A long read, but good at detailing the underlying problem between clickthrough advertising and the reviews they publish.
