  • Just a heads up, Dragon Quest 4 DS released

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

It's been remade in a similar manner to FF4 DS, which turned out very well. Reviews have been positive so far. I'll probably pick it up this week (I just got the FFCC DS title which has been keeping me busy, it's surprisingly good). If anyone else here played the original Dragon Quest 4, it was arguably the best RPG on NES, and almost certainly the best released in North America.

It's almost a carbon-copy of the PSX version released a few years ago with very little DS-specific stuff added to it. Not a bad thing for us considering we never got that one and DW4 goes for $100+

Dragon Quest IV was later re-released for the Nintendo DS in Japan in November 2007. The game has been remade in 3D, similar to the PlayStation version.[16] This release has kept many of the enhancements from the PlayStation, but has received enhanced upgrades to smooth the graphics further, and improved sound.

Shortly after the Japanese release, several people editing the Japanese ROM file discovered a near complete English translation along with Spanish, French, German, and Italian translations already inside the Japanese game.[17] Many fans took this to mean such an announcement was imminent. On April 9, 2008, Square Enix applied for a trademark to the title "Chapters of the Chosen", and speculation began that this is the new subtitle to Dragon Quest IV for an American Release. [18]

On April 18, 2008, Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen was found to have a rating of E10+ by the ESRB, for Alcohol Reference, Animated Blood, Mild Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, Simulated Gambling, and Suggestive Themes.[19] A official release date of September 16, 2008 was finally established on the official North American site.[2] The game has also been announced for a European release on an unspecified date in September under the title Dragon Quest: Chapters of the Chosen, omitting the number IV in a similar fashion to the European version of Dragon Quest VIII.[6]

This version of the game contains an entirely new translation of the script, and several enhancements to the game.[7] The new translation has changed the names of many of the main characters, weapons and towns to be closer to, or include their original Japanese names, while adding several new localizations.[7] This version also uses the new spell naming convention first used in Dragon Quest VIII, such as the spell Beat from Dragon Warrior IV is now Whack.[7] The new translation includes 13 regional dialects for the various areas[20] , including Burland now being Scottish, and Lakabana now being Irish.[7]However, the western translations have been slightly changed in places where the Japanese version included sexual components. This version also includes the Prologue and Bonus (Chapter 6) Chapters and Immigrant town (with some enhancements) from the PlayStation version.[7] This version allows players to take manual control of all of their party members in Chapter 5 and Chapter 6.[7]

Does Sqix do anything besides re-releasing old stuff these days?

Most of their releases are new games. It is just that their remakes tend to overshadow most of their newer stuff.

Yeah, they have Last Remnant and Star Ocean 4 coming. But if you look at the risk/reward of re-releasing old stuff or new games in old series' vs the new series' they tried since the PSX days, there's a reason they're sticking to sequels and remakes.

Please. Marvel was losing quality artists and story writers to Image (among others, like Dark Horse and Vertigo) left and right during the 90's. I was witnessing this before my very eyes with each issue progressively getting worse and worse, as they played musical chairs with the employees.

Hell, I figured you'd get a kick out of a comic book topical joke.

The reason why Square is releasing fewer and fewer big titles is because of technology, it takes much longer, and more money, to develop games now. If they're spending a lot of money on developing a game, it better be a high selling title or else they're in trouble.

It takes much longer, and more money, to develop their games now. You don't need multi-million dollar FMV to make a game, just some good gameplay and decent graphics.

I played a bit of DQ4 last night. I have next to no experience with DQ games, having only played Dragon Warrior ages ago. I realize this is a remake of a Famicom game, but the feeling I couldn't shake while playing it was that this game is a text-adventure and the graphics are just a bonus. I think had this just been white text on a black background, you'd probably have about the same experience.

I don't know how much time I'll put into this one, but I'm definitely going to pick it up again. The dialog is pretty entertaining and seems to relish in it's own hokeyness.

I was never a fan of Dragon Quest games for the way they dripped it in genericness.

The vats of genericness are currently sitting approximately 1000ft above ground level thanks to the revolting mountains of money they make from the series (if I'm not mistaken, this particular remake has sold over 2M copies in Japan alone). DQ has always been a very retro, no-chances, give-the-fans-the-same-thing series 'cause they have no reason to ever change thanks to the disgusting number of copies they sell. If you thought MM didn't change in 20 years, it's had WAAAY more innovations in that series than DQ.

7 not 8. But from what Grey told me, it's a great version of a very old-school game

There are a lot of similarities to SNES era RPGs in terms of gameplay, but the graphics, sound quality, extras, and locations much more resemble current RPGs; and it ultimately ends up being one of the best RPGs of the generation.

So it's essentially a SNES RPG in terms of gameplay, story mechanics, etc., with some aesthetic advancements which are, in turn, NES RPGs in terms of gameplay, story mechanics, etc., with some aesthetic advancements. Essentially, only really changes on the surface since the NES days.

Don't forget, I'm perfectly OK with that. I'm one of those who bought Mega Man 9 on Day 1. I'm just pointing out the fact that the DQ series has probably advanced the least in substance of any series out there, including the Mega Man series'

Sorry, but I play the demo, and the story was total garbage. The gameplay was the same tired bullshit that I grew out of 10 years ago.

I just have this thing where RPGs should have enough of the R, the P, and the G to be interesting.
