  • House of the Dead: Overkill - mini-review

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Now this game, while the same genre as Umbrella Chronicles (Light Gun style zombie shooter) actually has a fairly different feel. It features the same simple style gameplay, but the situations are more varied than Umbrella Chronicles; as well the game is faster paced, and feels more arcadey. It's also a lot brighter (and I am referring to the fact that RE:UC is fairly dark), and if we were talking movies; Resident Evil would be serious, and this one would be Pulp Fiction meets Scarface meets Evil Dead.

The game is in the style of an "X-Rated" B movie from the late 70's or 80's, the X being used for the reason that movies like these wouldn't have been able to get an R rating back then (example: A Clockwork Orange); rather than porn, which is what the X rating became synonimous with. The game aims for a grindhouse theatre style which it does effectively.

The dialogue is something you'd expect from the movies I mentioned above; it also has a very Vice City radio vibe to to it. As has been stated, this game is making the Guiness book of records for being the most vulgar game to date. The dialogue and cutscenes are very entertaining.

One thing that surprised me about the game was the soundtrack. It's one of my favourites in a long time. It reminds me a lot if Shadowrun, if Shadowrun had been made on a later system. Very contemporary (with a splash of 80's), it meshes well with the game, and are great individual tunes as well.

Overall, this game is a tight package. Everything fits together very well; and it is a lot of fun. Replay value is good, the game is good both single and multiplayer (unlike RE:UC which is most fun multiplayer and just sort of average single player). It's not getting the same attention as Sega's othe. Recent title MadWorld; but I am going to be honest here -I don't like MadWorld- maybe I need to play more, but it just doesn't seem my type of game; steroid pumped madmen in a comicbook style world with 143,000 different ways to violently kill people. I do think that Overkill aims at a different sort of audience; but there will certainly be overlap. Again, I just have to praise Overkill's soundtrack, one of my favourites in a game to date.
