This got buried with the celebrity deaths but it's the end of an era in gaming. The buyout of one of the last, big, independent developers and a true pioneer in gaming history

Is Valve the only independent developer of any size left?
It may sound like I'm mourning the death of id and in a way, I am. These guys epitomized the independent developer for many years and it's sad to see them gobbled up. Sure, it's just a sign of the maturing of the industry and id will likely still be relatively independent and never lose their identity even if they've only been a shadow of their former selves for a decade. But it just won't be the same.
