  • Can DS be the first to pass the 200 million mark?

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

It is currently sitting on 110 million sales worldwide and sales are still obscenely high being anywhere from 350,000-600,000 per week. Last months US sales alone were 537,000 according to NPD without any big releases in quite some time; and the US market for the DS isn't even anywhere close to the European one where it sells approximately 50% higher. August and September are typically slow months for the market, but DS has remained a HUGE holiday season gift throughout the world and that US number stands to go up into the millions for November and December, perhaps even October.

For comparisons sake, it took almost 9 years for the PS2 to sell 138 million units (PS2 turns 9 next month, this shipment data came from Sony two weeks ago). the PS2 is the top selling console in history. Within that history only once has it exceeded 537K in a month other than November or December according to NPD. This goes to show that the DS is still in its prime as far as sales go, and it is already more than half way to 200 million. The DS turns 5 this coming November.

It's portability makes it more popular then consoles, especially with parents looking for a cheaper alternative for their children. Games are also a lot less violent, typically, then something like the 360. I know that when my parents moved me from Virginia to Georgia when I was 6 I would have gone insane because there was a lot of time (summer) when I was just going around with them looking at new houses and traveling back and forth between the states.

If they can keep up the quality and quantity of titles they've been showing for the last 3 years, why not?

The DS launch schedule looks very nice even just considering what's on the horizon. Consider that the DS in Japan has already pushed far past the threshold the market reached with PSX and PS2, but it hasn't reached that here and in Europe.

-Edgeworth: Ace Attorney
-Final Fantasy Legend 2 remake
-Zelda DS 2
-Layton 3 (though this one may be further away because 2 just came out, they're on 4 in Japan.)
-Scribblenauts
-New Pokemon (not something any of us would likely buy, but the latest one just came out in Japan and sold out in one day with nearly 1.5 million sales and a bottleneck of 250K more per week due to some periferal).

Are what I canthink of that are coming up soon that are likely to generate a lot of interest in the system and grow/maintain its sales rate.
