I just got a 250 gb model since I doubt there will be any further price drops or incentives, before FF13, now that the system is selling decently. Any recommendations? I have been looking at the downloads, I have about 40 bucks left for that. I have been told that "Flower" is supposedly fairly fun.

Critter Crunch...

Valkyria Chronicles is amazingly fucking brilliant
Demons Souls
Disgaia 3
in that order

Flower
Pixeljunk Monsters
LittleBigPlanet
Valkyria Chronicles(you'll have to have this given the inclusion of Vyse, Aika, and Fina)

I would recommend MGS4, Bioshock, Fallout 3, MW2, Uncharted 2, and Infamous to most people, but I don't think you'd like those.

The PS3 games list starts with MGS4, then there's a very long gap, then you can start talking about any other game on the system.

you are an idiot. Valkyria Chronicles is one of the best games this generation. Demons SOuls is a brilliantly conceived albeit bitch of a game. So many excellent games on the system there are

Yes, there are a lot of pretty good games now, I agree. But MGS4 is still the best game of this generation and, IMO, should be the first one looked at if you buy the system

I set up the media server for it, and I downloaded Flower, FF7, FF Tactics, and Wild Arms 2. That should keep me occupied for a good time =)

Oh, and I already have Valkyria Chronicles, but it is lent out to someone who lives in Halifax. So I won't see that for a little while. Disgaea 3 sounds like a must have for me. I'll look into others.

Thanks for the suggestions.

For $60 Cdn? F dat shiet! Namco has forgotten the reason Katamari became a hit. It's an excellent A title and a steal at $20 or even a great deal at $30. But once you have to decide between Katamari or Uncharted 2 / Gears 2 / Modern Warfare 2 and other AAA titles or even having to pay more for it over games like Borderlands or Batman Arkham Asylum, it becomes amazingly easy to not buy it and forget about it.

Kinda like SNK's pricing of King of Fighters 12. Did anyone here even remotely consider pick it up as a full-priced title? Would you have if it were released for $20 or $30 instead of $60?

Yeah I'm not interested in any of those games, so for me Katamari is the easy choice.

Although this very well may be true, it is not saying much. JRPGs this generation have been exceptionally poor.

I would have to agree on Demon's Souls. Its a very old school style game in that its almost punishingly hard. I am greatly enjoying the challenge.

I strongly disagree. This generation has been really good for RPGs, The World Ends with You, Dragon Quest 4, 5 and the spinoffs, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Fire Emblem DS, Chrono Trigger DS, the Final Fantasy remakes, I enjoyed very much; not to mention the yet to be released FF13, DQ9 and DQ10, Tales of Graces, and the new Lufia game.

There's also a number of story strong adventure titles like Phoenix Wright that have become some favourites around here. Plus this generation is far from over, in most cases the best RPGs are released later in the systems lifecycle because of their long development cycles; with the three biggest RPGs (DQ9 and 10, and FF13) still yet to be released, this seems a big truth. The best RPGs and epic adventures on SNES (Chrono Trigger, FF6, Mario RPG, Earthbound, and Terranigma) were all released after the first three years of the generation (94-96, SNES came out in 91), PSX's first big RPGs started coming out two years after the system's release; but the bulk of the best PSX RPGs came out after the first 3 years.

You're not interested in ANY of them? That's a pretty good cross-section of genres there. Not even the shockingly awesome Batman?

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the console RPGs which, other than a few exceptions, has been relatively lacking this generation. The DS, on the other hand, has been fucking insane for RPGs and nearly every other genre. The sheer awesomeness of the library of that system never ceases to amaze me

Not compared to a new Katamari game. I am slightly interested in Batman but not enough to put it above anything else. Modern Warfare isnt my kind of game at all, same with Uncharted 2. I have a copy of Gears 2 I got cause the story looked interested, but its sat on my shelf sience the day I bought it and has never been touched. Borderlands looks moderatly interesting, but again not enough to put it above anything else I wanna get like New Super Mario Bros Wii, Space Invaders Extreme 2, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days, the PSP Persona re-release, Smackdown vs. Raw 2010, and others I have on the shelf I havent gotten to yet like Little Kings Story, Muramasa, and several others.

I'm starting to agree with Zues that live is a big pain in the ass ripoff. Yeah, a PS3 might be al ittle more expensive, but that price difference sure goes away fast when you consider the PS Network is free and live is 30 bucks a month.

Hence why I will never get a 360.

Just because you buy something out of the back of a guy's car doesn't mean you're getting a deal.

...it's $60/year. Or less if you buy cards on sale. Or even less if you root through game boxes at Gamestop like somebody here.

5 dollars a month is nothing. That's half the price of lunch.

Still, it is nice to not have the hassle of making payments.

By the way, Demon Souls I have heard is PS3's biggest sleeper hit and is a very good RPG.

Speaking of Sleepers from good publishers, anyone with a Wii should go after Rune Factory Frontier, it is essentially Rune Factory with all of the issues fixed, prettier graphics (the art is very easy on the eyes) and way more fun.

In the US, a Live subscription is $30/year if you get a year card from someplace like Buy.com when they have it on sale (which is pretty often). I never ever buy a Live subscription full price. At $30/year, that's $2.50/month. I find that much in change on the ground walking around.

It's $8.50 a month or $60 a year Cdn. Expensive? Not at all considering I would be using it right now about 10-12 hours a week. But the amount of the charge ain't the issue as we've previously discussed.

Also, it's a bit of a pain in the ass when trying to play online with people to have to pay for it. My bud and I wanted to play split-screen with my other bud joining us for online play. In order to do that we actually had to create and register an account for him. If he hadn't gotten a complimentary month of free Live with the activation of his account (ain't Microshaft a bit like drug dealers that way?), we wouldn't have been able to play. Simply put, that ain't right.

And I don't get these fuckers who go to Gamestop stores in the US and scavenge for 48-hour or 1-month cards. They're some level of psycho :-)

Too many great exclusives that the PS3 just didn't even touch for the longest time. But now 80% of the AAA titles are cross-platform and with the gap between the exclusives closing and the price finally hitting a reasonable point, you're not losing nearly as much as you used to buying a PS3 over a 360.

Out here, it seems to be just new ones going up that are Gamestop but all the old EBs are staying the same. They haven't said anything to their managers yet.

Just in case anybody was waiting to get a PS3, there are some great Black Friday bundles at $300. This is probably the best one:

More here.

Then again, you might be able to find them even cheaper at some places. Man, shit like this always makes me feel stupid for early adoption. I got the MGS 80GB bundle for $500 a little more than a year ago. At least it's backwards compatible I guess.

Yeah, I grabbed my 60GB nearly a year after it launched for the same price. I have no regrets though, since it was like 2 years ago and I have full b/c as well as having experienced the games that came out then in their time. I really enjoy playing games just as they come out because games are extremely time sensitive in how the player can enjoy them. You can't go back now and play system shock 2 and get the sense of wonder and amazement as when it first came out. Games are products of their time, and if played at the wrong time can have their experience and impact ruined by gameplay and narrative enhancements that happen in between the time they come out and when you play them.

I would agree to a degree, Bovine, but a guy like me who constantly is playing games from yesteryear, I'd have to disagree mostly on the experience comment. Sure, your expectations will be a bit different taking into account games that were released 24 years ago vs today, but great games never die. They're always fun regardless. And you can still get a sense of amazement / newness as long as the games aren't too old. 3D games on the PSX or N64 look ancient but I just recently played MGS2 on PS2 and it looked perfectly fine, pretty decent even now. You can pop in a 2D game from late SNES, early Saturn days and it would still be great since 2D games haven't evolved a lot from a graphics point of view save for a very few select titles.

Yes, you do need to change expectations a little. But that certainly doesn't mean you don't enjoy them as much, or more, than current games.

Despite the older looking graphics, my most played games so far are easily old PSX titles =)

Final Fantasy Tactics has taken a lot of my time; I actually enjoy watching out for spelling mistakes and obvious translation errors (Princess Ovelia, Orlandu, Wiegraf, etc... All mistranslated, they even gave "Orlandu" Excalibur, that's the same as making King Arthur's sword Durandal) =)
