  • Mega Man Universe announced (no Sine, it's not Mega Man 11)

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

It wouldn't surprise me if the final game ends up having nothing to do with the trailer. If you're going to make a game that's remotely like the trailer it's either going to be very bad or you got to throw a lot of money on it (because it'd be a very open ended game) and neither seems likely.

Yep, should be the same old drudge we've seen before with absolutely nothing different whatsoever

Generally speaking you got to actually put in a lot of money to make something that you have never seen before assuming that's supposed to be in a positive context. The blurb from Inafune is useless. You can literally say exactly the same thing about Lego Universe because imagination is their equivalent for 'mana' I think. In fact, I think I've seen the exact quote from the Lego Universe developers, even though it looks like a pretty normal MMORPG except you use imagination for spells instead of mana. But yeah, technically you can say imagination is the key, since it'd be hard to play a MMORPG without something like mana.

It's possible they decided to just take a huge team and do this but given Megaman sales have been going nowhere I don't see that happening either. You need a lot of people and a lot of money to make something that's very different just due to the overhead involved.

Yeah, cause you know, it's not like companies release marketing statements saying their games will suck.

We weren't talking about quality but rather game and art direction. With MM9 and MM10, they never pretended them to be anything other than NES-style remakes. With this one, they're at least trying to do something new. Don was sayin' there's no chance on that based mainly on their last two downloadable titles, I was disputing that fact with direct quotes

No I'm saying there's very little chance it'll be something very big especially if it's only going to sell for $15 because big things require a lot of budget. But if they're going to stick with something relatively cheap on budget the trailer would make no sense whatsoever since they could've shown some stock footage, so I'm going with the assumption that they just made up a random trailer that will not have anything to do with the actual game.

Prediction: the game will suck and will be the same old shit. Now quit talking about it!

Innovation doesn't necessarily required a big budget. In fact, most innovative games are made on a small budget 'cause no one knows how it's going to sell. The fact that this is coming out as a downloadable title suggests that Capcom isn't really going to be sinking a lot of money into a (sadly) dying franchise. This is the extent of their commitment, it's up to the developers to give them a reason to spend more next time.

They released that trailer as a teaser, not as a gameplay trailer. It's supposed to portray an idea (ie. retro evolved) not give details about the game itself.

There are three active Mega Man fans here, it's not OK for us to discuss the series?

If it's supposed to be one of those create your own world game the scope necessiates a largeish budget or it'll just not work. Based on the trailer that's the only kind of conclusion you can draw. Now if the game turns out to be just like a 2.5D scroller but you can throw fireballs instead of shooting at stuff with X-Buster then you wouldn't need very much budget at all, but then that kind of defeats the point of putting a trailer that's so off from the eventual game.

And that's the thing, we know absolutely zero other than they're promising big changes. I'm a MM fanboy, never argued that point, so I'm hoping it's something good. And with Inafune directly involved, I have guarded hopes. But until they full reveal the game, they're just that, hopes. I have no expectations yet other than trust in Inafune who's done pretty good in the past IMO.

I don't see the point to release a trailer if it turns out to have nothing to do with the eventual product, but it's hard for me to imagine how a game that looks anything remotely like the trailer would work, especially not for a relatively low budget game. So something has to give here. I think it's more likely the game just turns out to be nothing like the trailer, but then why release the trailer? It's not like the trailer was particularly impressive so this isn't exactly like say Square releasing the opening of FF7 even if the rest of the game looks nowhere near the quality of the teaser.

Simple: hype and awareness. That's why we see teasers for films all the time a year or more before release that have nothing to do with the film in any way (considering no shooting has taken place yet). This is no different

It's hard for me to imagine people get hyped up over this trailer if you're not already a Megaman fan. For example only someone who follows Megaman pretty well will know that the last Megaman was the guy on the cover of the American box for MM1. Not even a Japanese fan would know this.

At Comicon, Inafune talked a little more about the reasoning behind the vagueness of the trailer:
Inafune wrote:Moving on to Mega Man Universe, Inafune admitted that the recent trailer announcing the title was vague, and he began to explain the thinking behind it. Everyone has their own idea of what Mega Man is or should be, Inafune said. So the idea behind the game was to retain as much of the 8-bit look and feel of Mega Man as they could, while at the same time allowing people to project their own idea of what the character should be on the game. The goal is to let gamers play as the Mega Man of their dreams.

Another big goal for the game is to unite Mega Man fans from around the planet in one place. Unfortunately, Inafune said he couldn't get into any more detail. However, he did say he would let the crowd in on a little information against his better judgment. Mega Man Universe is not the only game currently in the works starring the Blue Bomber. There's at least one more, and Inafune said it was a project people had requested for quite a while. That brought scattered calls for Mega Man Legends 3 from the crowd, to which Inafune simply responded, "Thank you."

The producer then threw armfuls of foam Mega Man blaster arms into the audience, bringing an end to the show

I think that says it all.
