They did the math and realized that MMOs are more risky than pumping out some shitty clone every year.

I don't think it was meant to be a MMO, but at any rate MMO must be pretty profitable if any random game that totally flopped are still running. If they're costing the computer money, they would've shut down the game for good, yet very few MMO ever shut down.

That's just it, they DID spend money on that. Enough to get a relatively long concept trailer out which most likely means they had most of the concept art done, and that ain't cheap.

Likely died 'cause it's been Inafune who's kept his baby alive all these years. Now that he's gone, I'm sure the Blue Bomber goes with him
