The original Shadow Hearts got a 5.5 by PS2.ign.com which I find is a bad score for the game, I would have scored it around 8.5 at the very least.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant continues the story, only the game has SO much more to it than the original. It is incredibly good. The music in the game is done by the well known Mitsuda, and he does a great job with it. It seems like he was much more comfortable with this game than any other game since Xenogears. Anyways, IGN scored Covenant a 9.1; I do not think there is any RPG on the PS2 that is of this standard, personally. The graphics are top of the line, the story is great, and the gameplay is great.
The first one took place just before World War I, and the second one takes place during the beginning of World War I.
