After taking a few months break from this game to go on a Megami Tensei binge, I've gotten back into it.

Man, this is pretty fun. More than a few twists on the standard strat RPG formula. I just gave one of the story NPCs (about the kindest, most naive angel you could imagine) a spear, let her practice it a bit, and now she's bouncing off heads like Kain. Anyone can use any weapon that way, but different NPCs/classes learn weapons at different speeds.

The battlefields are interesting too...the Geo Tiles add a very interesting tactical layer to things. The map I was on last night had every tile but one flagged with invincibility, so neither the enemies or I could do any damage. Rather than moving the pyramid granting invincibility to the sole non-affected tile on the map, I instead surrounded the tile with my army and threw the enemies onto the vulnerable tile one at a time and watched them attempt to hurt me (which, of course, they couldn't).

Sure, you can go batshit insane and powergame the hell out of the system, but from what I've seen it's not necessary for the main plot (though I'm trying to set up my army so I can remort if needed). Throw in a complete lack of taking itself seriously and some fun characters, and it's well worth tracking down if you like the genre.

Flonne and Etna rock.

Have you played the other games put out by the same people? Phantom Brave, I think? I've considered picking one of them up, and any thoughts either way are appreciated.

I played La Pucelle Tactics, I actually totally forget if I even finished or not! That kind of disturbs me.

Anyways, I found it was a fairly decent game, I think either way, most people here would really enjoy the game. Certainly unique, very Japanish.

Yeah, Atlus is putting out a whole host of Nippon Ichi games these days.

From what I've pieced together, Disgaea isn't necessarily the best one, but it was enough of a success that it really got people interested in the Nippon Ichi titles, so it's gotten a bit more publicity that way due to the general appeal. Not that Disgaea's bad or anything.

As to which one of them would be the one to pick up if you were just going to grab one, I wouldn't know. I'd ask over at RPGFan or browse their forum a bit, there's a lot of NI fans there from what I've seen. It might just be a matter of availablity and what you can pick up new/preordered, since I've heard people having trouble finding copies of Disgaea.

I'll probably see if I can snag a preowned copy of La Pucelle or Phantom Brave after I beat Disgaea if I still enjoy the gameplay style, since I still see those floating around the EBX stores in this area.

Phantom Brave is one of the more ambitious strategy RPGs out there. The lack of a grid system and the whole posession aspect is a real refresher if you're kinda tired of the usual strategy RPG fare. Can't wait to finish this so I can get Atelier Iris.

I picked up my used copy at Gamestop for $16 a few weeks ago. The new price was't that much more, but the used game was in such pristine condition that's it's abvious that it was never played(it still had that new game smell).
