  • Will the Megaman series ever end?

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

By end, I mean some kind of closure, since all the Megaman series are supposed to be an ongoing battle as opposed to isolated events like say, Zelda, Mario, or Final Fantasy. My thoughts:

Original Megaman - Most likely never. I think Capcom probably forgot about this or at the very least don't have any idea how the events leading to the X series is supposed to happen.

X - Unlikely. It is awful hard to explain how things go into the Z series considering the two series aren't consistent. It is possible Capcom pulls off a miracle and explain Zero's disappearance, the Elf Wars, and the birth of Neo Arcadia perfectly, but I doubt it.

Legends - Unlikely. I think Capcom forgot about this series even though they say they did not.

Zero - 50/50. As it stands Z4 could be an ending, but on the other hand they still haven't explained the Elf Wars.

Why end it when they can turn the crank and get more games?

Ending doesn't stop them from cranking out another series. Besides there's something like 70 Megaman games in existence and that's well ahead of any other franchise in terms of # of games.

Am I given to understand that the Mega Man series has a plot now? Something tells me that the chance of incredibly lame storylines is very high...

They've been trying to have some semblance of a plot since the X series but it never gets beyond this grand battle of good versus evil that will have something terrible happen in it. The latest Zero game appeared to end the series but that's never stopped Capcom from cranking out more games to sell for money (for example, X6 has an improbable return of Zero after being blown to smithereens in X5, with X7 an even more improbable return of Zero who was supposed to be in a frozen sleep until the Z series at the end of X6).

I think those plots are excuses to have a game, not attempts at telling a cohesive story.

You know, for all that I love games, I think I still have yet to see one where the plot doesn't suck, compared to any other form of media...books, TV, film, etc.

There are bad TV show and movie plots that are as bad as most videogame plots, but I don't think there are any game plots as good as the best TV/movie plotlines.

I wonder if we may have to wait for true strong AI in games (read: NPCs/bots that interact realistically with real people, including conversation) before we will, too...

No. They make money for Capcom, so Capcom will continue to produce them.

I don't see how AI has anything to do with the quality of a story. The poor quality of plot in games only have themselves to blame.

Terranigma is the only game I can think of that has a good plot without an obvious fault.

70 only if you include European and American versions of Jap games

I'm all for the games, as everyone knows. Good platformers never die, which is why the X series is basically dead now. X7 was one of the worst games ever made and X8 was barely passable. It's all about the Zero series. Who cares if it's on the handheld? Fun is fun, even if it is just a minor improvement over the last time.

Even half of 70 is way too many games for one series. I don't think anything else even comes close to 35.

Whereas X series probably peaked at X4, Zero series peaked at Z3. The only way they can salvage this is if next game starred Neige or something. It's not that I like her, but Ciel has been completely useless in Z4 and Zero can't pull it off by himself.

Can't disagree there, but I doubt they'll get rid of Ciel. After Zero, she's by far the biggest character in the game. Maybe a damsel in distress game?

Had an odd glitch in the Xbox version of Mega Man 2 yesterday. I was fighting Wily (or Wily's computer generated alien rather) without Bubble Lead for a change, and from the first hit of the mega buster, Wily somehow became invincible to every weapon I tried on him - including bubble lead. No sound of failure to damage when I hit him, just nothing happened. Weird. Just thought I'd mention that... don't know why.

Easter egg Easter egg!

You have to hit him once, with every weapon that you got in the precise order you got them, at which point the alien turns into Bob Saget and starts telling his version of the joke from The Aristocrats in 8-bit FM speech synthesis.

(Note: I am completely, totally making this up and have no idea why your game glitched.)

I have never seen that before either.

I have to admit, I have gotten addicted to the new Battle Network series on the MegaMan games. I just cant put them down for some reason. 5 has been awesome, mainly because you actually get to play as characters OTHER than just megaman.

I think that was obvious when you said "Bob Saget".
