Companies register patents all the time. I think GameSpot is blowing it out of proportion. The used market (and the "borrow a game from a friend" market) is huge. Putting something like that in place is akin to shooting itself in the foot, nay, in the head.

Not to mention Nintendo and Sega lost a court case on this back in the early 90's. They tried to make rentals and used games illegal and lost. Then lost in Japan more recently. So there would be some legal ramifications as well

I think it sounds like BS. Anyways, I do not think Game Rentel is even close to as big as it was even 5 years ago. The last game I ever rented was sometime around the time when Dreamcast came out. I have always bought a lot of used games, but most games I buy are new (often on sale)

You, like the rest of us, just outgrew rentals. We make money now and can buy a $50 game if we please without braking the bank. I'm willing to bet that the 10-15 year old gamers out there still rent like you used to 5 years ago. Plus, i think that Netflix clone that mails games (whatever they are called) do pretty well.

I do not think Sony will implement game registration or anything like that in PS3. They have to know it would be suicide.

as an added thought... With consoles having harddrives and larger memory cards, i think Sony just wants to protect againt being able to give your friend an entire full version of a game to where both people can play without a disc at all.

I'm completely the opposite. I buy such a volume of games that, on a limited budget (I have a car, house, and a wife to take the vast majority of my money), I can maintain my collection and grab the stuff I want and also those I will never see again. I basically buy 3-4 used games for each new one at the least. If that's taken away from me (it never will be), I will be regulated to purchasing much less and, thus, enjoying much less.

Also, if it actually works, it'll go to DVDs next and I do the same thing there, buying about 2-4 DVDs for each new one.

Obviously, I would rather maintain the volume.....

I still rent, but mostly because I have a ton of Blockbuster gift cards.

If I know a game is a rental-beater then I'll rent it. If it's something I'll be playing for a while, I'll buy it.

Like I rented Batman Begins because it was easy to beat in 1-2 weeks so there was no reason to buy. I just rented Gun because you guys are saying how short it is. I'll probably get my fill of it in 1 sitting.

Heh, that's probably a better way of going about things than just buying everything that looks good =P

Oh, and to clarify something on Zeus's post; a lot of the time, at least around here, I find new unopened games to be cheaper than the yused ones. When EB games or Futureshop is having a clearance, for example, some great games can be found for under 10 bucks.
