  • First Swirve Games Utopia Tournament (details)

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

Mehul is putting together a new sort of version of Utopia. Here are the details so far:

* You can only sign up at the beginning; once the game is started, no more players can join in. Players are assigned random kingdoms.

* The game continues until only one kingdom is left - it is essentially a battle to the finish.

* Once a player is eliminated, they are simply gone from the game. There is no restarting or rejoining.

* Game would likely start in mid-December (maybe the 10th through the 15th or so). Timing is not very good with the holidays coming up, but I'm not sure it can be avoided without delaying this idea until January or February.

* Signups would be done before kingdom assignment; so all players who want to join must say so in advance. We'll simply put a sign up form up. This will allow us weed out cheaters in advance and eliminate "kingdom hunting", as well as set up the right number of kingdoms and such.

* We might start all players with lots of land - 1000 or 1500 acres, with a very limited exploration pool and no paradising. This limits the amount of land in the server, and with raze attacks, would prevent land sizes from going excessive as fewer and fewer kingdoms exist.

* The number of total vacation days would likely be limited to maybe 5 or 6 during the course of the round. We'd like to eliminate it entirely, but with the holidays, we want to leave at least some flexibility.

* There would be no account deletions or defections; the kingdom you get is who you're with, good or bad.

* We may merge smaller kingdoms as time goes on - that still needs to be worked out. There are benefits and drawbacks to this.

* We might also have military costs rise as the game progresses; this would provide a twist and force changing strategies, making the game more difficult as time goes on.

* Ideally, we envision this server lasting maybe 3 months. If it looks like its going to drag out, we may integrate some natural disasters or such to "encourage" things to start happening.

There is also a lot of discussion on how the war dynamic will work. some suggestions ask for a limited 72 hour war with a surrender option before hour 36. If a Kingdom surrenders before hour 36 a portion of its provinces will be removed from the Kingdom, split up, and distributed among other existing Kingdoms. If the war goes the full 72 hours, the losing Kingdom will have all of its players eliminated from the game. Wars are assigned based on NW values at random points in time after between 48 hours and 96 hours of peace. This is only a suggestion for the war dynamic.
