Behind the times as I may be, I still have to say that this is the first game where I have been really, truly touched to the root of my heart and soul by the plot. The ending, about passing on culture and history to the generations coming after us...OMG.
I don't often get to experience a sense of awe and majesty like this that just completely opens me up and turns me into a wild-eyed innocent fanboy.
And also, I had no problem whatsoever with Raiden in the plot, as it seems so many did. Unfortunate that there are many people out there who are so stuck on the military badassery of Snake, that it kept them from appreciating it. Solid Snake as personified in the Metal Gear series I would agree is one of the most classically awesome heroes in gaming, but the plot wouldn't have had the same effect with him as the protagonist. It needed someone with more vulnerability - like Raiden - and it's just unfortunate that because everyone was expecting to play as Snake, and have that "badass-ness", that it seems like a lot of them could not appreciate the complete opening-hearts-and-minds effect that the ending had.
