there's no debate about it, nutbars. If you played last night you noticed that witches were still NPCs in VS, and they're the ONLY special mob that is like that

Tessian wrote:Smokers are perfect for picking off people and drawing them into a crowd of zombies. One of the most effective things you can do is hang back and grab one of the survivors that's slacking behind right before they do something to get separated (like jump down a hole). There's almost no chance then for someone to save him. Or in the middle of a big fight, just pulling them out of the group. Smoker definitely takes more patience than the others.
Heh, like I was doing with the smoker last night. Did by far the most damage with an Infected by having the other zombies occupying the teammates with constant zombies and hunters, while I crouch and lasso them, move back away from sight (on top of a roof), rinse, repeat. I got about 7-8 good lassos before they finally killed me.

Picking off stranglers works well with the Hunter, too. It's just hard to find that opportunity when a survivor is separated. When they are, it's usually a full kill, though. However, they are by far the most popular Infected in the spawn cycle, and sometimes I just want to play a Smoker or even a Boomer once in a while.

The Boomer is also fun, though, yeah, they pretty much die in seconds. It's too bad that the puke doesn't regenerate, because I would otherwise puke, run, puke, run. There are times when I puke and don't actually get killed right afterwords, but the only recourse I have is to try to hit them with my claw.

I was watching a video on boomer strategy and how to play one better. The stuff the guy said made sense. You should spawn and instantly boom, then feint and hide, then come back out and let the kill you so you explode on them.

Boomers should be alive briefly then respawn, the vomit regen is too slow to wait around.

Yeah, the first campaign was fun. I think that was the first time in a Versus game that my survivor group was actually rescued.

Not being able to play a second campaign was a bummer though.

In any case, everybody should watch those three videos about the different classes.

the boomer video gets MAJOR POINTS for having WARCRAFT III music playing at least in the end <3

All 3 videos gave me some good pointers... the hunter one was most helpful. I didn't realize I wasn't using the leap correctly and if you angle yourself up when you jump you'll get a LOT higher... kinda like a catapult. Also didn't know that unlike everyone else the hunter's claw does good damage, so nice to know you don't NEED to leap on someone to do damage.

Jumped in a Vs game with Anarky. Best way to end a Infected match: in the hospital roof area, my hunter jumps on one guy and sends the other two guys hanging off the roof. So, 3 guys are down in one blow, which wins the match.

Yea Sine, that tactic works amazing on that level.

I hope you noticed how we played survivors though. You have to RUN if you play the game like you would with NPCs you will lose. Running makes the infected chase after you and does not give them the chance to setup ambushes.

Run as in never stop? Not even to kill zombies? Seems at some point you'd have a huge crowd after you, then all it takes is one of them to pull a survivor back or stop them and you're screwed.

You run and gun dude, its not that hard to do and sure you get occassional hordes but you need to always be moving forward. You never bunker down unless its a part where the game makes you wait for a door or something

Yeah, but there's some amount of pacing, too. If you run too quickly, you start to get people left behind, and you also have to worry about people trying to heal, etc.

I do agree that the AI runs too slowly, and the orders just don't work at all. Though, it's a lot different than how I usually play a single-player FPS.

We've been owning in Advanced lately. Last night Me, Shrin, Chris and Bovine did Dead Air and then Chris left and Sera took his spot for Blood Harvest. Night before Me, Shrin, Sine and Sera did No Mercy on advanced.

Who knows, with some more practice we might actually be able to try Expert some day ;)

Me, Shrin, and Bovine (and stupid ass AI Zoey) beat Death Toll on advanced last night which was pretty fun. First time in endurance round we tried to hide in the bathroom... this worked great until the tank came in unannounced and destroyed us. Second time we hid up in a corner of the 2nd floor and we did good.

Right after we killed the 2nd tank we're trying to make a run for the dock and she decides to hold me up to heal me so I had to shoot her in the face until she stopped so I could make it out of there. Turned out she made a great decoy, but god damn AI bad timing!

So who wants to try Expert next? :P I'll be curious if we can even beat a round, let alone an entire level.

I have mixed feelings on the tank... He is pretty damn easy to take out with an autoshotty and it sucks when you are finally getting to smack people around "DON'T TALK SHIT ABOUT TOTAL!"

But yea... survivors will have to play more cautiously

You MUST be talking about normal mode... on advanced the tank is quite a bit more challenging. Not only was it common for him to knock one of us down, but once he did he only needed to smash the person an additional 3-4 times to kill them. In Normal there was still the chance of getting knocked out, but never of dying too because of the tank.

I've killed tanks on expert dude. Moltovs then playing hide and seek as it burns to death over time

Depends where the tank spawns... if you're on an open street or field that's easily done - but in that greenhouse dead air level if the tank spawns in the apartments it''s difficult - at least one person is going to get incapped/killed unless you got a lot of notice with the music, even on normal difficulty. Especially if it's in between you and the second tier weapons.

On the topic of the heavy hitters, we (tessian, shrin, and I) were able to take down 2 witches entirely unscathed.

I think a lot of these updates are to make the versus match more like it is described in the developer commentary, and that is to simply make it about how far you can go, not about finishing each level.

Yeah I got my witch hunter achievement with you guys - bovine shot her and ran and while she was climbing up to get to him I just unloaded an entire auto shotgun clip into her... Good times :)

On the topic of tanks and gunshots, the hunter rifle really does need to be upgraded in terms of damage. It's great for headshotting zombies, but the damage really blows against a tank, even if you're constantly shooting the head.

I wouldn't mind being able to do a lot of damage with a headshot on a witch, too. Maybe not completely kill her, but enough damage to finish her off with 2-3 more shots. (Or maybe a one-shot kill. Not sure if that's considered cheap or not.)

 #131306  by Tessian
 Thu Jan 15, 2009 6:53 pm
With a decent layout and a clear area it's quite easy to kill the witch. The 2nd witch I startled-- she was outside a house so I shot her through the window then ran out of the opposite side of the house. By the time she even got close to me you guys had already blown her away.

Just keeping in mind that she will mindlessly go after the one who startled her makes it easy enough. Have an escape route planned and you're good.

 Thu Jan 15, 2009 7:04 pm
If you could kill a witch with only a couple shots of the hunting rifle it'd make it too easy. Right now the only way to instant kill a witch is to get into melee range and hit it point blank with the auto-shotgun in the head.

Well, he always has been a little more outward looking than most. Inafune recognized it too and created Dead Rising and Lost Planet with the US market in mind and look how well they did. Made Capcom reconsider their strategy.

Japs are starting to realize they're the smallest market now and almost by accident. Nintendo figured it out with the N64 when their asses were saved by the American market. Those who don't get it will fade away as we're starting to see now

Well after finally getting the witch hunter achievement I think hitting the witch (yes a molotov would be preferable) if the person runs/already is up on a ledge where the witch needs to climb up to it would make it really easy to kill her as she climbs somewhat slowly. From the Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z zombies aren''t supposed to be able to climb at all. I was taking those as canon so when I saw zombies running and climbing when I first bought the game I was very taken aback.

As Zoey says when you get into the elevator in No Mercy "I call zombie bullshit" they aren't supposed to be that fast. >:(
