Woohoo! I fixed my PS2 Disc Read Error...

My PS2 hasn't worked in about 6 months. It literally worked fine one day and then decided to give me a disc read error the next. Since then I haven't been able to play one game on it.

Now that Kingdom Hearts II is coming out at the end of this month, I decided that it was time to either repair my PS2 or get a new one. I figured I'd at least give fixing it a shot. So I went online, found some instructions, and tonight I tried it out.

After about an hour of fiddling with the height of the laser lens, I finally saw success. My disc appeared on the PS2 screen. After fine tuning the height a few more times, it nows loads all PS2 games right away and they actually work.

So I am taking it in to an EB/Gamestop on my lunch break to trade it in for a slim model. :)

You still have those instructions? My PS2 has the disc read error for movies that have worked on other PS2's.

Its a pretty easy fix, i remember doing it to mine. Of course, you have to open the case (removing a sticker that says 'reove this and warranty if voided') but after that it is just a little twist to some white cog looking piece and voila.

Nice job.

You've known and held out on me??? I thought we were friends!!! ;)

Yeah, it's so easy once you realize what you're doing. We're going to try to fix a friend's this weekend too.

Got a link to this miracle cure? I've opened mine to clean it before, but never tried anything else. Couldn't hurt to jimmy with my PS2 that hasn't worked in months.

That's the exact one I used.

Now, my PS2 looked slightly different. It had 8 screws on the outer case, not 10. The insides looked a bit different. And the white disc that controls the height of the laser isn't as accessible (though it's still pretty easy to turn with a flat-head screwdriver). Also, we turned the disc counter-clockwise to make it raise, not clockwise as this article states.

So, with that in mind, give it a shot and let me know how it goes. We're going to try it on a 2nd PS2 this weekend maybe.
