There's really only one thing that jumps out at me about this. If Sony releases the PS3 this fall for $399, won't the rest of the Blu-ray Disc Association want to tear them a new arsehole?
I mean, who in their right mind would pay up to a grand for a standalone BD player when they can get a BD player + internet-enabled next-gen game console for hundreds less?

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are dead before they come out. We just convinced our parents and grandparents that DVDs are viable and got them to switch. There's no way they're gonna wanna switch again. That severly limits the market which means these will be the new LD IMO

Neither format has a significant advantage over DVD. Plus, given the way technology seems to be going, it might not be another 10 years, perhaps even five years, before something immensely better comes along (perhaps they'll figure out ways to transfer movie data from one place to another through network in only a few minutes).
DVD offered a very large advantage over VHS, Blu-ray and HD DVD do not offer a greater convenience as DVD did over VHS, or CD over Audio Cassette.

So the actual story is what I figured - PSM just pulled a number out of their ass and everyone jumped on it.

The $399 number is not something that is too rarely suggested, but neither is anything between 399 and 800 at this point. I have been done speculating about the price for a while now. It is only two more weeks until we find out the real answer.

Probably not...

Nintendo will just wait for the PS3 price and price theirs accordingly, that's no surprise. But I will be surprised if there's no official price set for the systems at E3. The ONLY reason I can see for that from Sony is they're trying to find a way to get it down to $299 and can't, so there's no reason to open up from criticism this early. And Nintendo's waiting in the wings, as always

This is true. I think Nintendo might steal the show so to speak this year as the next-gen consoles arrive on the markets.
Oh look, my credit line just increased $300.
