Starfox Command

Since I finished Xenosaga, I have been able to dedicate a lot more time to this game. Initially I found the game to be quite difficult, but without too much practice I have quickly become an expert with it. A few things can be said about this game:

First, it is NOT a traditional Starfox game, it is half Starfox and half strategy game. It has a larger scale feel to it than previous games in the series have. Essentially there are two modes, the first is a map where you direct your fighters and strategic resources, sometimes there is a fog of war (which can be bypassed using certain methods), sometimes not. Essentially each turn you can maneuver your resources around. If your fighter encounters a group of enemies, then you will enter into the second mode, battle mode. Battle mode is like a typical Starfox game, you fly around shooting down dozens of enemies, although, there are only certain enemies within each area which you actually do need to shoot down. What the location looks like is dependent on where you are on the map.

The first time you play, you take the easy path and get the worst ending (I assume at least) and the most basic story. On the screen between each level, there is a bit of roleplaying that can be done, you can select what you want your characters to do, for example, after passing level 1 the options are "Go to Fichina, Fight the Advance Guards, or search for Falco" but only the first option (go to Fichina) will be available; the other options will have a lock beside them. Upon finishing the game, you get a key; witht hat key you can go through and unlock one of the side paths, and take a different story route. I find that this is quite an interesting dynamic for a game in this series.

So far, I have found the game to be fairly fun. The controls are similar to Metroid's, but simpler because all you have to do is worry about maneuvering using the stylus, and shooting using the trigger.

Storywise, the game has A LOT more to it than previous installations. There are also A LOT more playable characters, and each of the ships have different attributes and weapons types which make it more interesting: so far I have not found any weapon type to be more fun to use than any other, they all have their strengths and weaknesses, but only to the point where it makes for diverse play rather than better strategic play (or at least, so far).

Thumbs up on this game.

Oh yeah, oddly enough, unlike fighting or racing games, Starfox Command does NOT work well AT ALL while drunk.
