I'm fascinated by the whole "Russian bride" phenomenon. It just seems odd to be able to buy a marriage partner online.

I mean, it's demeaning to the women, but don't they sign up for it or something? Are things just really that hard-up out in the Russian hinterlands?

It is exploitation to the millionth degree. Some people will do anything to get out of a current situation. I.E. those guys who paid bums with liquor to fight (bumfights.com it was called) on video lost a court case and had to stop selling the DVD's. Those hot Russian chicks will marry some US slob pervert to get out of their country. I cant believe it is allowed.
