GH3 vs. Rock Band battle heating up

Rock Band songs so far:
The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again"
Mountain - "Mississippi Queen"*
David Bowie - "Suffragette City"
Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"*
Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear the Reaper"
*The Ramones - "Rockaway Beach"
*Rush - "Tom Sawyer"*
*Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Nirvana - "In Bloom"
*Stone Temple Pilots - "Vaseline"
Weezer - "Say It Ain't So"
*Foo Fighters - "Learn to Fly"
The Hives - "Main Offender"
*The Strokes - "Reptilia"
*Queens of the Stone Age - "Go With the Flow"
*Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
*Recently announced
Their plan for the game is to release downloadable songs every week including albums (the first of which is The Who's "Who's Next?")
They've also said that Enter Sandman is the first Metallica song of many, but will be the only one on the disc.
Guitar Hero III will feature Slash. Here's the track list so far:
"Barracuda" - Heart
"Cherub Rock" - Smashing Pumpkins
"Cult of Personality" - Living Colour
"Even Flow" - Pearl Jam
"Knights of Cydonia" - Muse
"Lay Down" - Priestess
"The Metal" - Tenacious D
"My Name Is Jonas" - Weezer
"Paint It, Black" - The Rolling Stones
"Rock and Roll All Nite" - Kiss
"Sabotage" - Beastie Boys
"School's Out" - Alice Cooper
"Slow Ride" - Foghat
Recently announced: "Rock You Like a Hurricane" - Scorpions
Rock Band is coming to 360/PS3. GH3 will be available for pretty much eveything.
GH3 has some serious competition on its hands in the form of it's former developer, Harmonix, along with the industry pull of MTV and EA's deep pockets. In the end, I buy them both and it's win-win for me.
Edit: Forgot that "Welcome to the Jungle" will be in Guitar Hero 3 as well. Interestingly enough, that was also the song for the first in-game video of Rock Band although it doesn't appear on any current track list.

Rockband is a good idea, but it will be hard to get everyone together and/or find someone who will want to sing. I read that it has online support so you can simply play with other strangers, but like trying to find healers in MMO's, the singers will be hard to come by, i would think.

Bars have karaoke night. They don't have "come play the drums badly" night. Plus, it doesn't need an instrument. I doubt finding singers will be a problem.

I love the "boss" battles in GH3, they sound awesome. And the online multiplayer and albums thing with weekly downloadable songs for Rock Band are going to rule. Just gonna have to get both I guess :-)

You can play through Rock Band as if it were Guitar Hero. The drums and microphone aren't essential, just another option. I'm banking on the karaoke law that anybody will sing when drunk enough.

Dude, karaoke! That groups of people playing Rock Star might have trouble finding a singer has never ever occured to me. Even playing Guitar Heroes 1 & 2, I find that I or my friends will sing along just for the joy of it ("Satan laughing spreads his wiihiiiings... OH LORD YEAH").

I read a review that said something to the effect of, "If noone is singing, you wont hear nothing!", almost like it was a good feature?...
Maybe it wont be as hard as i think, but personally, i think it would be hard to find someone to sing from my group of gamers... but maybe the non-gamer chick next door would be happy to do it. Alcohol should be involved with this game, always.

They meant that if someone is playing as the singer and they don't sing, you won't hear any vocals. They are the vocals.
If you don't have a 4th person taking on the vocals, it'll just be the normal vocals by the band like in GH. It's the same way for any of the instruments. I could play RB through by myself using only the drums. The guitars, bass, and vocals would all be done automatically by the game.

Some more info on the list:
Harmonix has also officially announced the first 16 Rock Band songs that will ship with the game. They are as follows, noting that any track with an asterisk is a cover (so yes, the majority are based on master recordings!):
1970s
The Who - "Won't Get Fooled Again"
Mountain - "Mississippi Queen"*
David Bowie - "Suffragette City"
Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"*
Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear the Reaper"
The Ramones - "Rockaway Beach"
1980s
Rush - "Tom Sawyer"*
Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead or Alive"
1990s
Nirvana - "In Bloom"
Stone Temple Pilots - "Vasoline"
Weezer - "Say It Ain't So"
Foo Fighters - "Learn to Fly"
Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
2000s
The Hives - "Main Offender"
The Strokes - "Reptilia"
Queens of the Stone Age - "Go With the Flow"
I'm glad that Enter Sandman will be a Master Track. It's too bad Rush and Sabbath will both be covers. Though the Ozzy impersonator for War Pigs did a pretty good job in GH2.

Activision bought Red Octane, who published the first two GH games that were developed by Harmonix. GH3 is now being developed by Neversoft because of this.
Harmonix then went on to develop Rock Band.

Harmonix was also contract to finish the 80s GH game that's coming. That's their last one before Neversoft took over

Kinda of a shame because it's not like Harmonix can say "well, I'll take the code for Guitar Hero so that you can't make another one", because the code is trivial. It was the idea and the rights to the song that made the game. And the controller, which can be easily reverse-engineered.
Was Harmonix smart enough to write a patent on the guitar?

I'm guessing no, since GH3 is being produced and published separate from Harmonix. And they're off to do a similar game.

No, that's Red Octane's guitar, who was a peripheral maker before they contracted Harmonix to make a game. But Rock Band will support the GH guitar even though it's gonna have its own guitars. Very smart if you ask me, not everyone's gonna be willing to shell out for yet ANOTHER guitar.

That and RHCP sounded fun, but I've never been a diehard Iron Maiden or RHCP fan, so they're not deal makers for me.
I do own Iron Maiden and enjoy them. I'm just not obsessed.

okay, so I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of these games..... but I've moved on up to a ps3 (still have the ps2 if I really, really need it, but it is on its last legs). So what the fuck am I supposed to do with my two old ps2 guitars? do I have to buy entirely new ones for playing of these two games? (although I guess GH3 is coming to the ps2)

I think you can get adaptors for your PS2 guitars so they'll work on the PS3... I THINK.
I've already got a wired one for my 360, so I'm still kind of hung up on whether to get the wireless guitar that comes with GH3 or the wired guitar that comes with Rock Band. I don't want to get both... the GH3 one is wireless, but the Rock Band one looks better and has a second set of fret buttons near the bottom of the neck (for insane solos in the game, I guess).
DAMMIT!

Anarchy in the UK performed by the Sex Pistols trumps all, and that is for Guitar Hero 3.

I have nothin' for the 360 so I'll be getting both the Rock Band total band set and the GH3 with guitar. That'll give me two guitars I HOPE will work with both games. We know the GH guitar will work with Rock Band but ain't so sure about the other way.
BTW, did you guys hear? If you buy the GH3 soundtrack, you get a code to d'load 3 free songs.

If you hit those, you dont need to strum... so it is supposed to make the solo's easier, but they are also now drifting away from what a real guitar can do...

They are? NOW the Thunderstruck and TNT videos makes sense finally! It did seem completely unrealistic that Angus was playing with his left hand while pumping his right fist in the air with the other. Those motherless fucks, using editing tricks to trick the non-musicians!
(j/k; it's a technique called "hammering" in guitar lingo. Basically, if you hit ("hammer") the string hard enough on an electric guitar and hold it for a split second, it plays the note just the same as if you held the string and strummed. Won't really work on an acoustic as you need the pick-up of the amp. You need some serious callauses though. When I was in high school I tried playing Thunderstruck that way but could only get the guitar to whisper it....and only at about half speed since I wasn't a guitar player.)

If I had to choose, I'd actually learn towards Rock Band as really, the only thing GH3 has over it is the boss battles (which are fucking cool). But the real strength might be in the downloadable songs (and albums) of Rock Band (they're with MTV now don't forget) plus the fact it's not just guitars. I luvs the drums too and would love to be playin' that with others on guitar.
I'm sure they'll find a way to make you buy a new one each year, but really, you won't have to unless you want to get the collection of music for less than paying for individual downlaods. It's not like there are going to be tons of graphical enhancements or changes to gameplay necessary. If they wanna add a new mode, it's a game update. Heck, even GH3 could add other instruments through updates, but it's not quite as likely or available off the bat like with Rock Band. And they want to make shitloads of coin off the DLC (downloadable content), that's the ultimate goal of the franchise. So you're sure to see TONS of new music.
It's the one game that truly has the potential to be a 5-year,+ infinitely playable game through DLC. All you need are new songs, nothing else. Even Madden updates gameplay but this one won't.

Hmmmm, rock band does seem to have better songs... damn. I know the other parts of the game will go to waste, though, i'm not going to buy the drums or friggin sing... but i guess the game is just GH plus more.
Online play is a must, too, i suppose. I was just thinking of getting the PS2 versions of either, but i may have to do a 360 or PS3 purchase for this alone. I agree with the longevity.

I'm getting both because I want all of the songs. I think I am going to prefer Rock Band in the end because of the drums. I loooooove playing the drums even if I suck.
Heck, I might even try the vocals when I'm alone. haha Plus GH3 hits a month before Rock Band so I will get that first, of course.
I'm not sure what to think of the battle mode. It looks like it could be fun, but the hands-on I have seen have made it sound like it's actually annoying to play. I don't mind if they have an extra mode that I just skip, but I think the boss battles force you to play that mode. The review in Game Informer was positive though.

I'd get the 360 and get each with a guitar so you have two (one as a backup and also to waste friends; not sure if the Rock Band controller will work on GH3 though...). Microshaft is huge with the DLC and may end up with more than Sony. It's more likely anyways

Yeah, Paint it Black, When You Were Young, and Even Flow really caught me eye for GH3... guh!!! So torn.
Also, GH3 will have songs specific for the guitar, which is all i am interested in really. Rock Band has to choose carefully so it caters to the whole band, some songs could be drum heavy and crappy for the guitar.
I assume Rock Band will also have to choose all songs that have vocals, some of the best songs in GH2 didnt have any at all, i.e. Psycho Billy, YYZ...

Kotaku had a list of supposedly leaked final tracks for GH3. They looked pretty good.
As for having instrumental songs in Rock Band, you're right that they are probably going after songs that will work well with all instruments though there isn't anything that says they can't mix up the lineup based on the instrument a tad. They could always throw in a couple instrumentals that don't show up in the vocal career path. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I know Harmonix said that the Guitar Hero guitar will work with Rock Band. I read that in an article way back, around E3. I don't think it matters whether or not it's a GH2 or GH3 one considering they're not gonna change the guitar from one to the next and screw the GH2 buyers.
You would think if that's the case then the Rock Band guitar SHOULD work with Guitar Hero with maybe the little buttons up the neck of the guitar disabled or or just being normal buttons as opposed to the hammering buttons that Flip mentioned. Heck, they could even work for that in GH3 as well depending on how the functionality works on them (that would be AWESOME in GH3).
So, I say that there's a solid chance the Rock Band guitar will work with GH3 for the fucntionality required in GH3 but only a very small chance the extra stuff will work. A good secondary/backup guitar

I think the variety with the DLC in Rock Band should be so great it won't really matter. And there's nothing to say they can't disable certain songs for certain instruments, like Spanish Castle Magic in GH1.
Although the songs on the disc will definitely be for all of them to make sure the career mode works fine. There should be little concern, though, since so many of the songs should easily be able to do all the instruments and vocals (like One by Metallica, for instance).
Also, Rock Band will be centred around the guitar, that's why you can buy it with guitar only but the other instruments either are separate or bundled with a guitar.
There should be great stuff on both which is why I'm sayin' as a fan, you may wanna get both games. I'm personally getting them both and am really lookin' forward to the drums like Lox. I loved Taiko Drum Master, got them all beat on Hard and half on Oni.

You are all a part of the downfall of civilization.

Ah hah...you're argument is missing one key thought however. We are all a bunch of lazy gamers who would never take the time to learn real instruments. Thus it is not stupid, just sad. Wait....that's worse. Crap.
