Did anyone here know that the Xbox Live cards expire?

Apparently, those pre-paid Xbox Live cards you buy expire! I did not know that. I bought a year's (four 3-month cards) worth a month or so ago and tried to renew my Gold membership. The cards expired on June 30th! Has anyone else gotten screwed by this?
I called Xbox Customer Service and the girl refused to help me with it. She even claimed to have talked to a supervisor. I asked her if I could give them the codes on the back of each card to prove that they were never used so that they could activate my account for a year. I asked her if they could credit my account the $50 or whatever it costs so that I could then use that money to get Xbox Live. I asked her if they could just activate Live from June 30th for a year since I basically bought a year of Live that is now useless to me.
She claims that she has no power to do anything like that. So tomorrow I am off to Walmart to try and return them. If that doesn't work, I am back on the phone to speak to the supervisor and demand Live for a year.
Annoyed, I am.
