Check oot. They're up to FF6.

It's pretty fucked how emotional I'll get over FF4 and FF6. No matter how good future titles are, they'll always pale in comparrison to my warm memories of 4 and 6.

Awesome. Too bad it's only 1 a week. I'd love to see the FF7 one.

The FFIV remake on the Nintendo DS looks really promising.
The fight with Cecil Tellah and Rydia against the Octomamm looks really impressive ;p

I just smashed Dark Cloud to bits in FF3 DS, fun battle, but Black Belts/Monks are WAAAAY overpowered in all job based FF games.

FFT? I didn't think they were that bad. Shit, the calculators and summoners could cream those guys. Nevermind TG Cid.

For what it's worth, I still remember beating the original Final Fantasy with a single Monk after Tiamat gassed the rest of my party.

Monks combined with Ninja abilities in FFT make the game a cakewalk. But yeah, Orlando is essentially a godlike character that also makes the game a cakewalk.
And for Nev, yeah, I think FF1 is the worst of the games for overpowered Monks/Black Belts, when using one, the rest of the party seems like very minor support characters after a while. I mean, when equiping the most powerful weapon in the game Masamune, actually weakens the character, you know something is up =P
THe issue withthe class is that they are always very weak and hard to use at first, but they have incredible potential. Healers aren't really needed because monk types usually kill off all the enemies in a battle before the enemies even have an opportunity to attack. Plus, in boss fights, often the monk type characters can chew them up and spit them out before the boss can deal enough damage to kill off the party (and a lot of the time, anyone at all).

Wow, those were actually really well-done. They weren't entirely cheesy, and they did give you the best parts of the game.
Better, or maybe more honest, than the stuff packaged with FFXII.

I just watched all the Final Fantasy ones in a row, they are really good. I cant believe they didnt mention Aeris dying, though... like they didnt want to give it away or something. Gay.
The FF6/3 one made my heart race at times when they played a particular tune, it will forever be my favorite.

You're referring to the one that came with the FF12 Super Edition, I take it. And yes, that was lame.

I played ff6 back when it first came out. I rented it and played it and thought it was pretty great, but did not ever buy it or actually beat it. I am playing it to completion right now, and I'm enjoying the story so far. Just hit Zozo for a second time, got my chainsaw and Cyan. So far it feels like some characters are MUCH more fleshed out than others.

very true. I think there was a focus in the game that was really placed on certain characters. but once it gets later in the game you start getting into a lot more of the personalities. at first I hated Setzer but then you get to the WoR and you get a little glipse of his past. plus they the character complexity of a lot of people. a lot of the character arcs involved in the story added a lot of what I loved about the game above others. other FF's tried that but I don't think many others succeded in making most of there characters as interesting.

Setzer's always been my favorite. I tend to like the guys who have the Airships--Balthier, the Tantalus gang, Setzer, Cid...
What FFXII could've used was some charcter-specific sidequests like FFVI, methinks. That would at least stem the bitching about the lack of charatcerization--a complaint I feel is unwarranted.

Of the older FF games (1-5), FF3j was my favourite. I didn't really like FFII (4) when it first came out, mostly because I required games to be fun and without a lot of annoying small things to do; unfortunately FF4 was both very easy and had plenty of little annoying things about it (all of which were fixed for the GBA release; and of course, that awesome final dungeon added). When FF4 came out, there were just better RPGs available, particularly on the Sega side of things.
FF6 brought RPGs to a whole new level, it was incredibly solid. Still one of my favourite RPGs to date.
FF7, liked the part when they were in Midgar, but the rest of it was fairly generic.
FF8 I loved the whole way through, totally unique, revamped systems that worked better. Finally more difficulty than the last few FF games that had been released here, and an outstanding musical score topped off with an incredible world, story, and characters.
FF9 was more or less an FF7 clone, it followed a very similar story pattern; cool beginning, then chase the metrosexual villain around the world. Though I felt this game was more solid than FF7 in a lot of departments, but worse in some others. Not a very original game like the last one.
FF10 did a lot for the series cosmetically, but overall it was a weaker game than previous installments.
FF12 was a much stronger game, there were some incredible locations in this game. The gameplay system was also quite good. Unfortunately I found the replay value to be quite limiting due to everything being spread out so far on the world map, in dungeons, and in towns.

I mostly agree--I like the older FF games, but only FFVI and, to an extent, FFV, really do anything for me.

Amen to that.
The Seeker wrote:FF7, liked the part when they were in Midgar, but the rest of it was fairly generic.
I've heard this opinion before, and while gameplay-wise, I agree, I'm still a supporter of FFVII's plot. I think the characters were really made very complicated, and the tone was kept even when the dystopian Midgar is less of a backdrop.
The Seeker wrote:FF8 I loved the whole way through, totally unique, revamped systems that worked better. Finally more difficulty than the last few FF games that had been released here, and an outstanding musical score topped off with an incredible world, story, and characters.
Eh...My opinion is, with the exception of Zell and Rinoa, the characters were pretty good. Effectively, the game was AWESOME up through disc 2, than REALLY BAD afterword. It was as if they really didn't know how to do a militaristic, futuristic FF, so they half-assed it with a Star Trek plot and added in a half-assed love story.
Agreed on the soundtrack though. World, too, was pretty interesting.

Oh no no no! You can't call FFIX an FFVII clone, because they're really very different. The metrosexual villain isn't even unveiled until the end of disc one, and you know nothing about him until you're well into disc two. While it lacked the uniqueness of VIII's basic premise, IX's story was far more aesthetically pleasing, and for the first time in a long while actually "felt" like an FF game. Add in a great soundtrack, and a very colorful cast of characters, not to mention some really great set pieces and locations, and you have what could easily compete for the best FF of the PSX-era.
The Seeker wrote:FF10 did a lot for the series cosmetically, but overall it was a weaker game than previous installments.
How do you mean weaker? I thought the plot did quite well, considering it doesn't have a happy ending, and the main character dies.

Mmm. Yeah, I love FFXII to death. It combined the best of FFVIII and FFIX.

I found that FF12 has the best gameplay of any FF, close to the best of any RPG. But, the story was shitty and boring. I was really disappointed with how bad it was when I compare it to the stellar storyline of FFT.
There was twists and backstabbings in FFT that made you feel like it really was you against the world, and there were themes that were never explored in any other RPG, and still haven't been explored since. (What other game has you faced to battle with their world's version of Jesus Christ?)
In FF12, it was real boring for a while, until they started talking about that ancient race. But, instead of facing battle with them, the whole thing ends up being kinda anti-climatic. The real enemy still exists.
Plus, the music in FF12 wasn't really all that special. The FFT OST was one of the most popular VG OSTs ever. There were sooo many good songs from that soundtrack. In FF12, about the only really good track was the music from the Viera Village. It was the only time that I really stopped to listen to the music. The rest wasn't bad, but it was forgettable.

Honestly since Final Fantasy 7 I have not had much interest in playing through a Final Fantasy.
I think FF6 and Chrono Trigger were the last RPGs I really dug in every respect. Maybe Xenogears...
