I'm back up (towel trick).
Request already put in at service.xbox.com for a replacement. All I need is for it to stay alive long enough for me to play the damn demo.
Decided to download with the system off. Probably a safer bet.

Make sure those motherless fucks extend your warranty to 3 years. Get them to give you a confirmation number to confirm it's been extended so you could always go back to them

rofl are you serious? God, I can't believe you go to play this and you get red ringed in posting, what are the odds.

Yeah, that's pretty funny.
I shall be demo'ing this evening!

Definitely NOT funny. In the early hours of the morning I restarted the 360 three or four times after it would stop downloading while in hibernation, or just freeze while turned on and downloading. As of leaving for work, it was only at 14%. It will be a miracle if I get to play the fucking thing.

Poor Blotus, bereft of demos...

Bereft of a functional system is more like it, dingus.

And demos too!
...perhaps I shouldn't be so chipper in the face of your hardship. If it's any consolation, I bought a slimline PS2 that burned out after three months and I didn't even send it for the warranty on it...

I see no sources on that. And given that I now *can't play* one of my CDs due to Sony's rootkit tactics, I'm really really reluctant to believe this as anything other than Sony marketing spin.
Besides which, stress tests on one set of systems do not imply quality standards, even if this is more than just another Sony spin scheme.
Speaking of damage - Blotus - I have my 360 relatively high off the ground on a table, but with the power brick on the ground, on carpet. Usual temperature in the room is from 70-85F, no A/C. Have never had a problem, though I rarely leave mine on for more than, say, eight hours at a time, and usually more like three. What happened to badring your system?

I just bought an elite. Did I hear correctly somewhere that all elites were extended to 3 year warranty due to some abnormal failure rates, or is this just wishful thinking?

Nothing I had any control over. It and the power supply sits about a foot and a half off the carpet on a wooden bookshelf, surrounded by nothing. I think I'll try and lay my next one horizontally.
I hope the system is unfixable and MicroSHAFT decides to send me one of the new ones with an HDMI port... HA! I wish is more like it.

Everything is one year, 3 rings is 3 years

The 3 ring problem is nothing anyone can avoid... it's just a lottery draw as to whether it happens to your or not.
And no Lotus, they won't be sending you an Elite
Non-Elite consoles are not yet out that have HDMI's... instead you'll most likely just get a "fixed" refurbished console back.
I imagine Microsoft's RMA department having 2 large piles: Pile A is received damaged consoles, Pile B is "fixed" refurbs. They get your console, toss it into Pile A, then grab a console from Pile B, ship it to you.

Actually, there have been a few reports of people getting an HDMI version back from the repair dump.
I was red ringed too btw
Just in fucking time for Bioshock and NHL 08. Couple of points to remember:
- If you send in a Premium model and don't get an HDMI or Premium casing back (I specifically put a note requesting this) - COMPLAIN till you get free shit.
- When you get your refurb (whatever model), it comes with a new 1 year warranty and you have 90 days to purchase an extended warranty from there, if you want (I would, don't trust this refurb shit).
- Test out the crap on your HDD when you get it back, make sure all your stuff still works. If it doesn't (or does but you need to redownload it) - COMPLAIN till you get free shit.

any helpful hints on how to avoid the 3 point red ring? Who all has had one and who hasn't? My power brick died on me and then I learned that you must plug it into the wall, no power bars! I enjoyed a red ring hardware failure once as well, just surprised me one sunday that I really wanted to play rainbow 6.

I don't think there's anything you can do to avoid it.
Of my real-life friends that own 360s:
Me - RED RINGED
Sven - RED RINGED
Matt
Paul - RED RINGED
Danny - RED RINGED
Four out of five, and Matt only got his 360 a couple of months ago.

I've had mine since January, no sign of any problems whatsoever so far.

I had an issue with my connection from the system to the HD; one-ring issue. Once I complained my ass off and sent in my system, they repaired it and I've had no issues since except for one time where it was on for 4 hours in and enclosed space (forgot to open up my cabinet) and I got the three rings. But I just let it cool down and no issues since

Have you sent your system off, Blotus?
Turnaround time for mine was pretty good, once I got it sent off (I had to call them a bunch of times over a period of about a week to get them to email me the receipt I needed to attach to the 360 before I could send it). I got it back within around a week of sending it.
(you were being a real asshole earlier in the thread, BTW, Nev :|)

Waiting for the box. Day six.
I had a sticky note from Purolator on Friday, as I was not at home when the driver showed up with the box. Had to re-arrange the delivery of the box for Monday.
What's this shit about emailing them for a receipt? Emailing who? Did you buy it direct from Microsoft and not get a receipt? You're not making any sense!

Haha!
Before I could send it off for repair, Microsoft support needed to email me with a thing I could print off and stick on the front of the box I was sending it in, with the address it was being sent to and a couple of other things written on it (like my support ticket number, I think?).

For what it's worth, my 360 is now RROD'ed as well, so if anyone thought I was being *too* much of an asshole to Blotus, fate has been well revenged.

Before I got my 360, I had never had any problems with consoles at all.... I really sympathize with you guys..... it sucks and it sucks hard... especially with tomorrow being tomorrow and all.

I just dropped mine off for shipping. Hopefully I'll have it before the end of next week.
And that blows, Nev. I hope your replacement is a speedy one.
This is the fourth dead console for me (well fifth if you count both 360's). My original NES died as well as my first PS1 and PS2.

Are red rings very common in elites?

here is some
information that may help you with that one.
Destructoid talks about it, and a
couple other
sites weigh in too.

My 360 had been fitfully working, but now it's completely shot.
That's what I get for having faith in Microsoft, I suppose. Stupid, stupid fuckers. I wonder what junior engineer just out of college is responsible for the engineering boondoggle that's fried almost the entire first generation of 360's. Guess I'd better get on that repair call.

Keep bugging the shit out of them 'til they send you a repair box. The repair centre is great but the call centre is filled with retarded monkeys following protocol. You literally have to call and bug the fuck out of them EVERY SINGLE TIME something happens. Also, insist on them giving you something in return for the hassle, like a free copy of PGR3, PDZ, or Kameo. But you have to call regularly for that

The 360 call centre really is appallingly bad. Fea and I had to call them probably seven or eight times in total to organise for my 360 to be sent off.

I had to go through a lot of motions before I got mine sent off. Although I did get 3 free games from them :-)
