new cheap ps3 plays less games

Wanna buy a cheap ps3? Well, say goodbye to backwards compatibility. This whole next-gen SKU bullshit is so stupid. I don't really know what Sony is thinking with this and the whole Dualshock-Sixaxis controller that is coming out soon. Everything they said that they were going to do at launch (full backwards compatibility because the 360's is lame... and rumble is so last gen) is the opposite of what they are doing now. Yar.

Do NOT - I repeat, do NOT - trust Sony's press releases and stated intentions whatsoever. They are there to decieve the foolish and weak.
There are some things that are kind of just accepted about the current state of the game industry, and one of those is that Sony's marketing machine prioritizes hype at a fairly high level (let's call it nine out of ten) and factual loyalty to its customer base at a relatively low one (let's call it negative three billion, for the sake of argument). NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO on this tip, as long as the games are fun, exciting, and flashy, there will be a significant fanbase who'll follow them around anyway. People really don't care about promises made in the past when there's a new and exciting game comes out, at least not enough to stop buying that game.
Would it be nice if Sony's marketing department was honest? Yeah, because some of us love the games and hate the pack of lies. But at some level, you have to realize their business strategy is more about luring the easily bedazzled (which can be quite lucrative) than it is about building up trust with customers.
The sooner you realize this, the more you will join the rest of us who tend to go get popcorn when a new Sony press release comes out. I can think of comedians that aren't half as funny to me these days.

Honestly this was the model they should have released in the first place.
PS2 has like what? 79 million units sold world wide or some crazy crap? Backwards compatibility wasn't needed, now they're just gonna catch shit for not including it.

Though they did get one sale from it. A guy I work with had his kid's PS2 go up. So he buys a PS3 to play PS2 games. His excuse was that he also wants to play PS3 games but he NEVER plays games because he's too busy. He basically got a $600 PS2. Always makes me laugh.

That's a bad deal, lol.
But think about it, PS3 is $600 when it comes out, the PS2 was already $129, now the PS3 is gonna be $400. They could have saved so much time/grief/money by chopping out the backwards compatibility in the first place.

Much as I hate Tycho's obnoxiousness sometimes, there's no denying that PA still brings the funny like a damn typhoon. I still think they hit more than they miss and it's been eight years...the Nintendo blogger one today made me guffaw.
I will say they're the only webcomic authors I've e-mailed who've never e-mailed me back though, despite multiple submissions.
The funny thing is, Andrew Vestal knows them fairly well (or he did last I talked to him) and I know they used to be big fans of the Gaming Intelligence Agency, so I could probably either talk to him or e-mail them back and name drop if I really, really wanted a response. But I refuse to suck up! I will earn a meeting with them honestly through my own gaming cred or otherwise someday!

sorry team, but I'm going to be whining about the ps3's backwards compatibility slipping away forever. I don't sell my old consoles, but I wish to retire them before they die on me. My ps2 doesn't play any blue-backed games (it's from launch, so it's old), so I want to put it to bed before it stops working altogether. I'm sure I'm the only one who cares, so either ignore my posts about this or tell me to shut up, but I'm still going to post them.

Are you kidding, bov? I'm still furious that I can't actually play FFVIII through on my PS2, now that I've decided I actually want to finish it.
I gave my PS1 away *because I had heard* that the PS2 was backwards-compatible, and now I have to go get an old one from somewhere because FFVIII usually crashes within ten minutes on the PS2.
Sony's rampant lies are awful and garbage, but also unlikely to stop anytime soon, so my feeling is kind of to never trust anything they say ever again. But I fully support rage at outrageous claims of backwards compatibility, do ya thing man.

Bovine... no offense but they announced this back before the last price drop-- where have you been?
I just take more and more joy out of this whole PS3 debacle... and you STILL can't easily find a Wii (or so I'm told)

I still have my PS1 model, SUCH a great system and it is even smaller than the Wii. I am playing through the Suikoden games on it right now.

I'd prefer not to say on that too much, Blotus. He hasn't talked to any of you in years - shit, I haven't talked to him in about a year at this point - and the whole Nintendo blogger thing and my own experiences getting netshafted just kind of have me feeling like personal info is not for teh postingz, especially since it's not me.
You'll have to accept "he's doing good", I think.

Thanks for the inquiry though. I'll tell him "Shrine says 'sup" if I see him anytime soon.

I'm not sure it's that secret, Nev. He's working for Blizzard (he's credited as the <a href="
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/bas ... calisation Producer for the Burning Crusade), and his personal homepage is the first hit for Googling "Andrew Vestal"
.

I can be an idiot sometimes, I guess. Does he talk about Blizzard much on his page then? I haven't been to yukihime.com in a long time.
I actually had a dream once (while I had a really shitty job situation) that he invited me to come by Blizzard, and the building itself was like a descent into a fantasy underground cavern filled with magical video game machines surpassing any subjective video game experience I've had before. I doubt really working there is quite that much fun or that much like a video game itself - I'm not sure if my brain really wanted to play Final Fantasy that night or something, sometimes I do *not* understand my dreams - but yeah, he's doing very cool things and is working hard.

They seem to think the PS2 has about 3-5 years left in it.....so does Sega. Those Wii-like controllers coming with the Real Sports series are part of the effort. I think the removal of backwards compatibility may be to encourage PS2 sales.

Uhm.... no. The removal of backwards compatibility was to lower the cost of the PS3 itself. If anything they'd want people to buy backwards compatible PS3's to play PS2 games... but this latest PS3 model is their effort at reducing costs with the console so it can actually compete with the market. Still not going to work since they got shit games so far... but they had to try something. And Backwards Compatibility isn't the only thing that got axed... I forget what else did though.
