SMW is better!
I would have agreed with you before I played SMB3 again. SMB3 I have been having much more fun with, it seems to have held up a lot better over time. There is more variety in the amount of suits you can have (frog, boot, racoon, fire, tanuki), plus you have an inventory of many items which you pick up from Toad Houses, rather than just one. Overall the level design is MUCH more diverse in Mario 3 from Mario World (though the Star Road levels were all quite good in that game). There are a lot of mini games, including a slots bonus game, a concentration game (that spans the entirety of the game, I actually forget what you win here when the board is complete), and a card collection game.
On level design, the difference in quality is quite evident between the two games, Mario 3 just feels like more thought was put in, as well as more polish.
The only real advantage SMW has over Mario 3 is cosmetic. Even with the extra colour and sound channels, it doesn't particularly make the game more appealing to play. Mario 3's art style is quite good, it has a lot of very nice tunes as well; better than Mario World's.
Mario 3 utilizes the NES hardware to nearly its maximum potential. There are few games which run smoothly and look that well.
Now I am not saying Mario World is a bad game, it is quite a good game and I do enjoy it. What I am saying is that Mario 3 feels like a much stronger game. The levels are more fun, the different settings in each of the Kingdoms (mushroomland, desert, water, Giant, etc...) are more interesting (though I did find the illusionary forest to be interesting). There is not really a lot of stuff that Mario World did that Mario 3 didn't, they just replaced haunted castles with haunted houses, threw in Yoshi and berries, replaced tanuki with a towel, and put in colour blocks. Though there was stuff taken out as well (like a lot of the above mentioned stuff).
Though in the end, play Mario World, and then play Super Mario Brothers 3, once you get to the third Kingdom (Water Kingdom) you'll understand why so many people enjoyed this one more =)
Super Mario World's Star Road and special world levels are quite good though, that was a nice treat, I give the game that =)
I would argue Super Mario Brothers 3 as one of the very best games of all time. I quite enjoy how it has held up.
