  • I'll give praise where praise is due: M$'s repair department

  • Because playing them is not enough, we have to bitch about them daily, too. We had a Gameplay forum, but it got replaced by GameFAQs.

So I got the 3RLOD (Red Lights of Death) last weekend when I popped in Assassin's Creed. I called them and they sent me a box to send my system back in. On Tuesday, I brought it to Purolator for next day delivery (M$ pays for that now). On Friday I come home and there's a Purolator slip waiting there for me. I go on Saturday and guess what was there? My replacement system.

According to the Purolator lady (she claims to see the systems every day almost; and I'm in a city of less than 300k), the repair department doesn't actually repair systems up here, they just send it back to you. And really, that would make sense since they would have received the broken system on Wednesday, sent out the replacement the next day on Thursday, and it arrived here on Friday with me picking it up on Saturday. They would have had no time to actually repair the system, especially if they're receiving so many of them now.

Very similar to my other problem last year where I sent out my system on Dec 27 for repair and had it back about 9 days later. They may have shoddy hardware and a putrid CSR department, but their repair department is amazing, at least up here.

On a side note, I picked up my system on my way to the games store I go to on Saturdays (it's right on the way). When I got there, they had a used Halo 3 edition system. I was able to trade in my system for the Halo 3 one (newer hardware, HDMI port, different colouring on the system, HDD, controller, and wired headset) for only $35 + tax. That should hopefully decrease the risk of future breakdowns as apparently these new systems are pretty solid and gives a limited edition system to a collector. I can tell you they're MUCH quieter and don't get nearly as hot as my old Premium did.

I did have to transfer everything from one HDD to the other (the Halo 3 one is different looking, but a 20GB) using a memory card since you can't use a transfer cable on the 20GBs (no input for it). I lost some videos I had (Gears commercial one, most of the Viva Pinata 10 min eps, and the South Park "Let's Fighting Love" episode that you got for free when they announced it for HD download) but none of the profiles or saved games. Overall, I'm very happy with it and the upgraded hardware.

Now, back to all the games (Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Orange Box, GH3).

Wow that's awesome to hear... I want a newer box too! :P

They never disguised the fact that your box goes into a "broken" pile and they just send you one from the "fixed" pile. The quieter part comes from the DVD player though... they finally replaced them with ones that aren't obnoxious back around January.

Glad to hear it worked out for ya, I had no idea they were replacing them that quickly.

When did you send yours in? If I remember correctly, it was right around the time the announced the 3 year warranty. If so, they probably actually went through the process of repairing it rather than just sending out the refurb one right away.

Tess, I think when I sent my old one in last Dec they replaced the DVD drive. I noticed when it came back it was a lot quieter. The Halo one is even quieter than that one.

Chances are they were so backlogged and it was a new process that it took longer. By now they've managed to streamline it and ramped up.
