December in particular

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6184847.ht ... op;title;1

1.36M Wiis (6.29M for the year, 7.38M lifetime), 1.26M 360s (4.62M,9.15M), and 800k PS3s (2.56M, 3.25M)....that's over 4 million systems in December alone. Fucking crazy. And that's before you even include the 2.47M DSs (8.5M, 17.65M) and PSPs 1.06M (3.82M, 10.47M). 6.5 million systems in one month? Wow. I mean, we all knew it was a video game Christmas (anyone else notice there was NO big toy this Xmas?) but those figures are just staggering. The US is now dwarfing Japan in terms of overall industry size. I hope we get overall Europe stats, I'd love to see what the world market is like (yes, Andrew, I'd like to know what you outbackers and kiwis have been buyin' too :-).

Essentially, it was a pretty solid year for everyone. The Wii has gotten more popular since launch, the 360's insanely good lineup from the end of August on really boosted it (looks like well over 3M of the systems were sold during that time), and even the PS3 sold 800k units in December (nearly 25% of the yearly total)...and there's STILL nothing to play on that system (well, a few solid titles, but it pales in comparison to the Wii and 360).

Not too long ago, there was a lot of talk that the market couldn't handle three separate platforms and only one handheld properly. Not any more.

That definitely explains why Live went into a coma after Christmas

I don't agree with the US market stretching the margin, Japan's industry grew more than the US industry did in 2007. So far this generation with Wii reaching 5 million, DS becoming Japan's best selling videogame system ever passing 21 million (and still going strong), PS3 at 1.5 million, and PSP at 8.5 million, it is a little more than the usual 50% of US sales, instead it's more than 75% of the market. Typically, in Japan, Nintendo and Sony systems sell about 50% of what they sell in the US.

I think the European market is about equal to the US. I estimate the Xbox 360 to be much lower, but the DS to be much higher (perhaps even up to 25 million), the PS3 and PSP to also be higher, and the Wii to be about equal. European numbers are REALLY hard though, I think it has something to do with the laws, numbers seem to come out on a quarterly basis though.

1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360); 1.47 million
2. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii); 1.40 million
3. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PlayStation 2); 1.25 million
4. Wii Play (Wii); 1.08 million
5. Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360); 893k
6. Halo 3 (Xbox 360); 742k
7. Brain Age 2 (DS); 659k
8. Madden NFL 08 (PlayStation 2)655k
9. Guitar Hero III (360); 624k
10. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii); 613k
Just short of the top 10 best-sellers for the month was Guitar Hero III for Wii (#11), which managed to tack on another 500,000-plus in sales, putting Activision's Wii music entry well beyond the million-seller point.
