Anyone else have this game? It kind of came in under the radar thanks to Halo 3 being released around the same time, but it's a pretty awesome RTS.
The story is pretty simple-- It's the height of the Cold War and the Soviets have invaded the US. I haven't played much of the campaign but it's a pretty good story as you try to lead what's left of the army in defense of Washington. Where the game really shines, I believe, is the multiplayer. The matchmaking system is pretty good; ranks and stats better than CoD4. The best part is though-- you can join and leave a game WHENEVER YOU WANT. Let me repeat that: This is a RTS where you can join and leave games whenever you wish and there's no penalty or damage done to the team. I think that's pretty fucking amazing; how many people got disgusted with WC3 and the like because douchebags would leave in the middle of a game and it took forever to get a game going?
This is possible because how the gameplay is designed. You have no bases, only a drop zone. Every person chooses from 1 of 4 disciplines (Armor, Infantry, Air and Support) and everyone's given a set # of credits to buy whatever units they want in their discipline. The only way you get more credits is by having your units destroyed, then those points slowly come back. Experience is given by the way of Tactical Aid points which allow you to do everything from fix a bridge to recon to launch a nuke (and god DAMN does the nuke blast look pretty)! The game is based around holding control points but they do it in different ways (static points around a map, or attack/defense roles, or tug of war). There's also more maps than I'm used to available... I've been playing for a month now and I still am finding maps I haven't played yet.
The game is just such a simple yet well designed RTS-- I love hoping on randomly for about 30-60 minutes a night then when I get sick of it close out and play again later. Not having to worry about staying in a game the entire time or getting things set up just right is a huge deal for me. VOIP chat is enabled and DX10 (which I have used on my laptop) is pretty sweet looking but looks good even on the lower settings.
Definitely recommend it to all the RTS fans we got here. And if you do get it let me know so we can team up online
