Smash Brothers Brawl released in Japan

<a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/849/849608p ... html>Sales have topped 700,000 so far</a>

While Mario Galaxy didn't sell overly quickly in Japan, it seems that they are eating up Smash Brothers Brawl. It will be interesting to see how the title fares once it is released over here and in Europe. I think this game will easily surpass Mario Galaxy's ~6 million to date.

But, I thought Galaxy was supposed to be the best game on the planet. Why aren't the Japanese eating it up?

They're all your illegitimate children, that's why.....

Zelda games don't sell well, FPSs don't sell well.....Japs are crazy with their tastes

Depends on the Zelda game, Ocarina of Time sold quite well in Japan, and recently, so did Phantom Hourglass. Twilight Princess was aimed at the North American market. First Person Shooters aren't popular in Japan because the Japanese really like depictions of the character they're playing on the screen, and you can't see them in first person shooters. It might have been the same here, but we like Bond. After Bond they gained mainstream acceptance.

I hated phantom hourglass. Most backtracking in a game, ever.

I still haven't played it. I actually heard it was a lot of fun though.

It is fun, but not AS fun as any of the other Zelda games, imo.

The backtracking was irritating and the game was way too short, but still worth a play through. I borrowed my copy. :)

My favourites are the two N64 titles, but I liked Wind Waker a lot as well with the exception of the Triforce fetch quest near the end and the overly vast ocean before warping appears.

The handheld ones usually are not as good as the console versions, but I actually found Link's Awakening to be more fun and satisfying than Link to the Past; it felt like it had more substance to it.

Mediacreate lists it as selling 819,647 units. That is over half of the total units that Melee sold in its lifetime.

You mean just in Japan? I'm pretty sure Melee sold in excess of five million.

I'm relatively certain it did well over 2 million in North America alone. It was easily the most popular GC game

You sure it wasn't 819,648 units? How can a figure be that accurate?

The low(ish) sales of SMG in Japan can certainly be attributed to an overall change in the tastes of Japanese gamers in conjunction with a wider userbase. Minigame collections and brain-training games are hot shit, but anything with a mech and underage girls still does very well.

Mediacreate only covers Japan, Melee sold 1.5 million in Japan according to Mediacreate.

I am just posting the figure released by Mediacreate, I don't care if it sold 819,647 or 819,648.

I disagree, it has to do with the 3D Mario series not being popular in Japan. Mario 64 had limited success in Japan; It sold well initially but sold much better in other markets. I don't see any logic behind a wider userbase being reason for poorer sales of a game; especially when the sales data does not agree with this as Mario Galaxy shattered the sales rate of Mario Sunshine exceeding the total sales in about two months. I think it is clear that a wider userbase has only helped the series. In addition, New Super Mario Brothers sold about 6 million copies in Japan, the difference is that it is a 2D Mario game.

They have crazy tracking over there, that's why they report to the single unit rather than the thousand unit like NPD does. NPD uses estimates whereas the Jap trackers use actual figures. Don't ask me how, I haven't found an article that fully explains it, but that's what I've picked up from the articles I've found.

It's called market saturation, right now DS has already pushed past the limit.

I was joking, actually. It's just one week, DS still regularly beats it although the Slim has closed the gap big-time. Oddly, only one PSP game was in the top 10 this week, what the fuck are they buying the thing for?

Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Mario Party 8. Those three games are consistently in the top 10 over there.

Amazingly, Wii Play sold 4.5M copies last year in the US, behind only Halo 3
